Well, they can't seem to be able to keep a frame intact, so maybe extra weight and power will help.

During morning commute in China nonelectric bikes are a minority - 75% or so can be electric. If you want to compete in the market there, you better have electric models.

I was sitting at a cafe having a cuppa' with my minivelo by my side. Some fellow asked me if it had a motor. I felt indignant at the question, and told him I was at least three decades away from needing a motor.

That's the perception but not the truth. Anyone can have injuries or physical issues at any age. Also, a motorized bike is a lot cheaper than a car, so there are financial reasons to have one even if you are young. I had one when I returned to biking after several decades absence. Sold it when I got back to being comfortable I wouldn't get stranded somewhere. They can be a good confidence boost for a new (ish) rider, too. I recall riding my e-bike at a street festival (keep in mind this was Berkeley) and some young guy scolded me for "cheating". I patiently explained to him that if I was not riding an e-bike at that moment, I would be out driving in a car using fossil fuel and polluting. Because of that e-bike, I am now 90% car free (I only drive if I have a passenger or am getting 40 lbs of dog food from Costco). I think people don't always realize the e-bike brings NEW people to biking more than changes manual bikers to e-bikers.
All that said, you couldn't pay me to get on a Tern with a motor. Double the danger, double the risk.

So, this entitles you to look down upon others who may use an ebike? That's messed up brother.

Messed up? I'll tell you what's messed up. I work hard to entertain my bike habit, i live and eat healthy, keep fit and active. This chump, the first thing he says to me is, 'does it have a motor?' pointing to this bike.

That's messed up!

So, THAT means you should insult others because someone asked a question about your bike? Because you feel insecure? I'd expect your ego to be a bit less fragile,...since athletic individuals usually react differently to the uninformed. Especially since most of us hold you in such high regard.

i was bothered in the same way that i would be bothered if, when shooting with a DSLR, a chump asked me whether it had a selfie mode or whether i had a selfie stick for it.

Then deal with the individual, not everyone else, in a condescending tone.

In case you may not have noticed, there's an electric bike section of this forum. All these people are inferior? All are chumps? Basically, because someone insulted your vanity, you decide to damn everyone else who uses/may use an ebike? Wow,....FUBAR

Talk about a storm in a glass. I have not insulted or condescended to anyone. I did not make blanket statement. I spoke only about me. You want one, you need one? Swell. Knock yourself out.

Let me share a story.
Relatively fit 40 something competed in national level sport previously.
Sat down to enjoy dinner at work next week annual leave, then holiday to Italy.
I stood up afterdinner and had pusedo giving way in both legs like I had just done an intensive interval session. Unexplained neurological symptoms struck from nowhere. I am recovering slowly.
Recently I have been looking at electric bikes and often it enables more cycling. Ie get to work without needing shower and bike back. I remember the introduction of full suspension mountian bike being frowned on for similar reasons about doing the work for you.

having started this obsessesion with MTBs in the 1990s, i can say that dual suspension is passive, unpowered, and if anything it saps power. it's purpose to maintain/increase traction, and steering control.

good luck with the recovery.

Thank you for kind words.
My point is you can never know what is round the corner.

I like the idea of ebike touring. That seems reasonable. Rather than sap all your engery getting there you can do something active once you get there.

Guys! This is clearly a squabble about nothing. You don't have to agree with someone else's viewpoint, but you shouldn't attack him and criticize him for it. He didn't insult anybody here in this thread or in this forum, so what's the beef? Philosophy? Mindset? To each his own.
