Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The wind in Illinois today

Well today I was glad to be able to run because riding a bike would have been torture. I have never seen the wind blow and blow like today huge gust and steady. Here we are at April and while a great March the weather today IMHO is worse than if it was 25 degrees but no wind. My house sits up very high and way it faces makes the upstairs sound like a wind tunnel. Not an April day for a long ride to build the base.

OK I am through complaining anyone else this edgy today.

I saw a 52 mph gust reading on my weather app this afternoon in Peoria. I think sustained at the time was 28 or so.

This weather is crazy and is moving east. Upstate NY may get close to a foot of snow. The entire upper NE will see some snow and temps are 20 degrees below normal.

Another polar vortex!

Started my ride at six am and it was not too bad. The last few miles, at about ten, were torture though.

60 tomorrow in Chicago. SW wind. An old house painter once told me, you can't trust the weather until June 15th. Sounds about right.

Global weather change. Back in the 70's when I was racing, I could get in 2-300 miles a week in April. We would get windy days, but not like the wind we get now.

It was OK on the MUP down by the Fox River as long as you were on the west side of the river - but get up out of that valley, or on the east side of the river, and it was intense. That last mile home was interesting.

Wind killed the power at work today. I was intending to ride in the evening but I went outside and clipped in, and nearly got blown over. I went back inside and climbed zwift's new mountain instead.

Neighbor lost a giant pine tree! Just missed the cars. Skipped bike riding when it started to snow and hail, just rode my horse instead (indoors). Yeah, it was a lot better a week ago.

We left at 5 am to avoid the worst of it, then raced home downwind at 30 mph.

As are retired construction engineer, I can tell you that's about dead on in Central Illinois, anyway. The winds die and temps become fairly stable. That will last until around the first of September or a little longer if we're lucky.

I noticed a pickup in wind strength in Houston maybe 6 or 7 years ago that I swear I never remember experiencing as regularly during the nearly 30 previous years we had lived here. Of course I am ignoring the alternative explanation that I am just getting old, but really think it is different now. Large parts of the spring are just much windier than I ever remember.

It's howling in Boston today and snowing - we're supposed to get 3-5" today and another 3-5" again tomorrow. Wild.

Wind has been howling all night in Baltimore, came up with a bang. Halfway thru 2nd half of NC/Syracuse game. Had lightning and thunder. They say it's been up to 38mph, but it feels like more. S'posed to stop soon. Ain't nobody riding in this.

Woke up this morning to find that wind here, and snow on the ground. Missed riding yesterday because by the time the rain finally stopped, it was almost dinner time. Dunno if I have the guts to go out in this. Especially with the wind coming off the water. Sigh. I hate weekends when I don't get to ride.

Just not true. Look at historical data and you'll find winds haven't changed. Some of the strongest winds on the Midwest were in the 30s

Well go up today no time to ride before Mass so did a 6 mile run wind started to pick up again just as I finished at about7:10 am and now it is are blowing crazy again. The good thing is the runner in me had my best week of running since I broke my hip 17 weeks ago 37 miles. Amazing when I get off the bike for a week the running legs get smoother..............oh wait this is a bike forum right?

Save the riding till things settle down.

Indiana had the same thing Saturday...our club had a morning ride...finished about 11am....fortunately as the wind picked up Into the 20s, we had an awesome tailwind on the way back into town....but I'm glad we finished before the 50mph afternoon winds....

...Incidently, I picked up a lot of sticks from my yard today...

wind was horrible today. unfortunately the wind is a common occurrence in the flatlands around here. mostly we get 5-10, but today was just crazy, spent the day cleaning in the garage instead of taking a ride despite the 70 degree temps... grrrr

March/April in Illinois = WTF.

Saturday: 31 degrees, heavy snow flurries and strong westerly winds. I did 35 miles on the fat bike on the Prairie Path and had a blast.

Yesterday: ~70 degrees, brilliant sun and ridiculous southerly winds. I took the single speed out. Any time the road turned remotely south: holy crap, easily a 30MPH block headwind. There's no foliage on the trees so there's essentially no wind block. Out west of the Fox river, I felt as if I was going to be blown off the road.

The worst of it hit Saturday, but the tail end of the main chunk of weather passed through Minnesota yesterday. Other than a little wind (10-15 instead of 24-28mph sustained the day before), it wasn't too bad. A small group of us went out for a slightly toned down version of one of our regular routes - removed a few hills because riding season hasn't really started here and instead of dropping distance we eased off the climbing. Wind was SSE when we started, 4 hours later it was WNW. Very little of the ride was anything but head or crosswinds. We were adding hills back into the ride just because there were trees to shelter us. Would have been a much nicer ride if the wind stayed where it was. Unlike everyone else, I remember it being like this here in late March and all of April. Lots of windy days here in the early spring.

The back of the windstorm is nice and warm, but when it passed it pulled more air down from the north and temps will be 35 degrees cooler today, so I guess those of you in the east have that short bit of warmth before the other shoe drops again to look forward to.

Don't worry, it's still -18C (~0F) here in Quebec City with the wind. And there will be 10cm of snow this wednesday. This is one of the worst april month I ever see for cycling here...
