Do you stop for school busses?
Today I was riding then a bus came. I had to stop for the bus and that seemed forever. Took the bus 5 mins just to pull in and let the kids off then leave. I dont imagine messenger bike people stop for busses.

I don't imagine anyone but you would wait 5 minutes for a school bus when it is quite sensible and legal to dismount, walk the bike past the stopped school bus and continue, a process that takes less time than it does to read this sentence.

+1. You have to stop if you are a vehicle but not if you are a pedestrian.

funny that I have wondered the same and never considered walking the bike as an option.

Yes I stop. Never had a bus take more than 2 or 3 mintutes. I obey the law while riding so that when I go on a forum and whine about cyclists' rights, I don't sound like a hypocrite.
Same in the car, I stop. Sadly enough, I've seen city buses run right by school buses with red lights and stop sign extended.

I do as a matter of habit, but I had to this morning.
I was coming down a hill at about 30 with a green light at the bottom. Then, suddenly a school bus does a right on red from the side street and blocks my lane. I came very close to going right under it.

Yes always. I usually only see them on a two lane black top near our house and they only take a minute or two. I'm not in that big of a hurry.

You're kidding? The bus stops. After awhile, it goes. It does not look to the right before turning right. It is too busy and important for stuff like that.

Yea I stop and wait for the clear signal then proceed. As some suggested, maybe I could dismount and walk the bike across not a bad idea considering that the bus could take as much as 5 minutes or so to load and unload school kids. OTOH, that 5 minute wait allow you to rest.

I stop for busses, red lights, stop signs, and crossing guards too. The law is pretty explicit about it. I don't ride like a bike messenger and I don't drive like a taxi driver; it's incredibly rude, often illegal, and doesn't really get me there a whole lot faster anyway.

As many people have said, just get off and walk. A bike & rider have a magical ability to turn into a pedestrian, while cars do not have that luxury.
Alternatively, I've also turned around and rerouted down a different block.

I think that public perception of cyclists effects our ability to ride safely and harassment-free, as well as our ability to enact changes in the traffic code that benefit our user group.

I would stay behind the bus, for the first stop, and then potentially walk around it at the next stop.
I haven't been riding behind a bus, but I have twice been caught behind a bus that was the slowest bus EVER.
About once every block the bus stopped, and a child got on with a parent. I assume that the parent then executed a security search of all the other students, at which point, all students on the bu7s did a security screening of the new passenger. Once everything was secure, the parent led the children in singing all the verses of "The Wheels on the Bus" and then said a personal good-bye to all of the students, then wandered off the bus.
The wheels on the bus go round and round.

I don't stop for buses. Most of the time I see them so far ahead I can make a detour. If I was right behind the bus and it stopped, then I would.

Breaking the law and looking like ******* kind of go hand in hand, don't they? I agree that just applying motorized vehicle laws to bikes less than ideal, but it's what my city has done and I'm not in the habit of picking and choosing which laws I want to follow and which I don't. At least in regards to traffic and conduct in public places.
