For $4.5k with a "single chainring" that you can "ride across the country," I'm thinking this might be "Grant wants a 650B Rohloff bike."
If I were loaded, I'd go for it for curiosity's sake. If I'm right about the configuration, it wouldn't even be a bad deal.

I wouldn't shell out the green for one of his regular bikes, so I certainly wouldn't shell out that much for one, sight unseen, even if it's supposed to be some kind of wonderful.

Price is not that far off from a regular riv build. Not really too bad for a custom quality frame.
Although to resort to this, one has to conclude business for them is a bit shaky.
I'm guessing this is the prototype for the suspected riv 'budget' commuter. Also guessing it's a belt driven IGH.

This is for the Kool-aid crowd, there is probably a line of "Riv" people waiting to buy one. Next year the "stock" bike will come out for only 3G's and the first owners will proudly proclaim they have the originals.

I think Rivendell folks are nuts; you can buy a complete custom (including paint) roadie from Daltex cycles for under $3k, and that includes Campy 10 speed gear.

The way that his blurb has been written looks really unprofessional and almost over familiar - a huge amount to pay for something that
doesn't even sound that great. The form has typing errors and it's full of ridiculous statements!
I know Sacha White - vanilla / speedvagen did a similar "suprise colour/design" road frame and forks - they're top quality as you'd expect from him.

This is just Grant being Grant. If he's not your cup of tea, fine. I'm guessing the bikes will sell, because there are a lot of Riv fans out there, because some of them have a lot of money, and because some will want to be able to say, "I'm riding a copy of GP's personal, custom bike." The fact that it's a very limited edition will make it more attractive to some potential buyers. You've gotta remember, too, that it's not really a $4300 gamble. Someone who buys it and doesn't like it will be able to resell it whole or in parts and recoup at least some of his or her investment. Still, I wouldn't shell out more than $4K on a bike about which I know almost nothing.

Well $500 of the price is going to charity. While I am in no position to buy one, I am not in anyway bothered by it either. It is Grant's company, he bears all of the risk so why should people get all bent out of shape over it?

For those that can afford it, this sounds like fun to me. It's sort of like being a patron of the arts and commissioning an artist to do something of his own choosing. Whatever it turns out to be, it will be quality. Maybe it will be orange like the rain pants :-)
