Hanging Camera from Neck Works Great

I got this idea from someone here on the forum, but just got around to trying it.

I hang the camera from my neck while riding with this "strap."

I expected it to swing around a lot, but it doesn't at all. It stays remarkably still, probably due to my great riding technique. Even when mashing up a hill standing, it's not a problem. And it's very quick and easy to take a photo or video, with no danger of dropping the camera.

I might try this with my better camera, which doesn't fit in a jersey pocket.

But I realized it's hypocritical of me to complain about drivers on their cell phones if I take videos while riding. I guess I'll stop.

All over the north coast, people are living in fear of being run over on the roadway by TA when he is distracted by his camera.

I use a rather large superzoom camera. I got a 2 inch wide neoprene strap I got years ago from Snapfish (never use them for prints, their quality is horrible. Strap is real nice though.) I put it over my head and across my chest with the camera rotated back to sit on my side. I shortened up the strap so my leg wasn't hitting it and I barely noticed it. I do ride a hybrid though, perhaps on a road bike it might not be as easy.

I'm planning to start carrying it all the time as photography is a bit of a hobby of mine as well. I might be as bad at photography as I am at cycling but it is enjoyable, lol.

I do that frequently with a Canon G11 which is a bit too heavy. It would be more comfortable with a light weight model like that Coolpix but I like the optical viewfinder of the G11.

On the 5 Boro Tour, there where lots of people taking video while riding. There where also lots of people texting while riding. Many of those folks crashed, or caused crashes.

YMMV

I have a cheap bento bag that I put on the top tube for tours that works great. Just reach out and take pictures while riding. I has a velcro strap that holds it in the bag.

I usually put mine in a back side pocket (the theory being it is safer for me to crash with a had object there then right against my spine). A bento box works well too.

I always just stick my Powershot A590IS in my shirt pocket, with it's lanyard hanging out, so I can fish the camera out quick.

I love that camera! The best less-than-50-bucks I ever spent!

I've been lost to the forums recently, because since my switch to a new computer with new OS, and switched to a newer RAW processing software (Raw Therapee instead of UFRaw) I've discovered the exact channel-mixing setup to get perfect colors out of the old CHDK sensor-dump raws, so I've been redoing ALL the old photos that I still have the CR2 raws for. My newer RAWs are all in DNG format, and have correct colors from the get-go, so this stuff has been on my mind lately.

I carry a Nikon Coolpix L28 on a neck lanyard on our rides. It takes great photos.

You wear them back pocket bike jerseys ,
make the lanyard long enough to reach all the way back to those pockets.
could even be elastic cord.

Heard Go Pro is going public soon you can get in on the IPO. buy a block of shares.

CR2 is the extension for Canon cameras newer raw picture format. (The original was CRW). CHDK is a firmware hack for Canon cameras, that enables features that the cameras don't originally have, such as RAW format pictures. The CR2 raw photos that CHDK makes are literally just a dump straight from the sensor. DNG is an Adobe format standard for RAW photos of all sorts. It stands for "Digital Negative." CHDK also makes RAW photos in this format, though it takes a bit longer.

No need to ignore it. I understood exactly what you were describing. I guess that makes me a fellow photo geek. I've even tried RAW Therapee, although I'm still using an old version (v6.x) of Capture 1 for most raw processing.

I often combine birding with riding, so the binoculars go around my neck and the zoom camera stays in my shorts cargo-pocket!

On subsequent rides, I find that I'm less likely to take the camera if I plan to have it hanging from my neck. I might go back to slipping it into the jersey pocket.

I once had a saltine-sized camera, I think it was one of these:
