Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Our mighty Pirates got off the Schneid by beating the brew crew. Stopping a 6 game losing streak is critical.

The guy leading, and winning, this crit in 1968 is Jack Disney on a single speed. He was a 3 time Olympian and 5 time National champion. I never met him but people I know did. He passed last week @ 93.

Apparently he was a badass on the track, too.

Maybe 15k speedplay miles here and not a single problem! certainly one of the more trouble free parts of a bike for me.

I'd have trashed the joint - cuponoodles cups and Ricola wrappers thrown asunder.

We are going to LA in 2 weeks for Heidi's graduation. The USC graduation speakers have all been canceled due to P&R issues which sucks for the students (it's been all over the news. Sad!)

I HAD been planning to rent a bike for the week, but we have an apartment rental smack downtown which is NOT convenient for cycling OR for cycling rentals.

I may just skip the cycling and be a fast-walker for our visit. I know that's crazy talk, but as of now that is my inclination.

I know, it's tough to say no to that.

OTOH the idea of having to take a train from downtown LA out to near your area would be a PITA and I am thinking we may be visiting periodically in the future when we could stay in Pasadena or similar.

I am still not sure, but leaning against riding this time. Sad.

Dumb car questinon:

For the past week or two, I notice the Saturn is shuddering while coasting. It's fine and smooth when I give it gas or pop into neutral. It idles at rest more-or-less ok, with a little up/down in RPM 1100-1300.

My best guess is whatever controls the engine at idle is giving a little more/less fuel causing the shuddering when it's in gear and coasting.

Comments?
