I believe Chicago Schwinn's chrome was (is) the best of any bike builder I've found so-far. I won't dispute with the Church in New Hampshire (especially this close to caucus / primary season) but I use 0000 steel wool on all my thrift shop Schwinns and usually the rust cleans up quite well.

I disagree with you about it being worth the money involved in putting them back on the road, tires, brake pads and a new chain from Niagaracycle.com or Biketiresdirect.com, and cables from WalMart might even beat Rev Bob's estimate.

And BTW, if the rust is heavy in places and you are only after a "rider" geeze man, take a wire wheel to the crank, it won't hurt it.

In my stable of 3-speeders I have 3 Collegiate-3s (Chicago ones w/Sturmey Archer - not Shimano) including a 24" wheel one and will pick up more as I find them.

Try some '50s Raleigh chrome sometime. That stuff will polish out, even when it might look like solid non-surface rust.

Well, I'm going to keep it around. Maybe I'll delve into it when spring comes. In the meantime, if I want to do some cross training I can lift it.

That '66 is gorgeous!

Hah! I've done a '57 or '58 Sports and a '70 Superbe this year plus a 60-something Dunelt and a '68 Hercules/AMF and Kurt, my experience is that on rims and handlebars the Schwinn chrome cleans up better than those four Brit ones. This of course is nowhere-near scientific and I can't account for how the bikes previously had been stored or parked.

My stable here currently consists of 14 S/A 3-spds with 7 being non-Schwinn, so I do believe I'm not just being chauvinistic about the Schwinn chrome.

Hmm. My experience was with three '51s. There might be a difference between early and late '50s chrome from Raleigh. Worth a check.

I think Schwinn put on a thicker layer of chrome than they did grease. At least that's been my experience.

My LBS has a 70's Collegiate with rebuilt sturmey hubs going for $70. Would you say it's worth the money, frame is in good shape with no dings and only minor scratches. Other than the chain most parts seem to be in good working order I didn't look at it too long (ended up picking up a Raleigh Grand Prix for $25) but I think it has 24" tires, what size tires could I fit on it with fender clearance leftover.

I had a 1984 Collegiate pass thru a while back. It was built by Giant and had the Shimano 3SC hub. It is currently being ridden and enjoyed.

Here is my 1979 Schwinn Collegiate 3 speed with 24" wheels,I picked this up about 10yrs ago for $2 at a auction, needs a good cleaning and polish,I picked up some NOS Goodyear whitewall tires for it so far but this thing has sat on the back burner for the last 10yrs because I don't no what to do with it once it is finished.

FWIW, I just picked up an 83 collegiate... apparently one of the oldest "new" collegiate that were built in Taiwan with the Shimano 3CC hub and the 590 wheels... hub needs a bit of work, paint is good. I'll post pictures after I put some elbow grease into it...

that was my first bike in '67. Replaced the rear derailleur with a Suntour in '70. Last year I was cleaning out my dads storage garage and there it was. Gave it away to a young lady who thrilled to get it.

I had a 1968 yellow, 5 speed collegiate that I paid the dealer extra to put drop bars on. I rode that bike for 5 years and sold it to a college student who used it at college for another 4 years before it was stolen. Neither of us ever lubed the bearings and it ran like a champ-how I wish I still had that bike!

Interesting. The first time I seen the short rear fender I thought it was a front fender that someone installed on back. Now I see that some came this way.

Here's my $5 garage sale Collegiate waiting for the once over. Schwinn speedometer and generator included even!
