I rode 25 miles with the usual Wednesday crew plus a couple of friends who I haven't seen on the road for a few months. One is my mountain biking mentor, a 63 y/o competitive XC racer who weighs about 140 soaking wet. Great guy who sometimes frustrates me with his attitude about road bikes, seeing them as strictly a training tool for MTB racing. He occasionally gets frustrated with the hammerheads he usually rides with and sells all his road bikes, only to feel the training need and get a new one a few months later. He seemed to enjoy our ride. We'll see what happens.
The other returner was my friend who recently did a tour in Afghanistan as a medic and is now pushing a tough schedule in school and work to become a PA. He is a pretty strong rider normally, but this was his first ride in months and he's hauling a few extra pounds and was dead slow on some of the hills. I and one other friend dropped back with him as the others eventually rode ahead. Towards the end he said he was sorry I had to stay back with him. I told him it was no problem at all and that I was sorry he had to go and fight for me. He said that was no problem at all.

Wow, last night it dropped below 100 for the first time in weeks so I stomped out 30 miles after work. Woohoo fall is in the air! Okay, it's not, but hey - joy is where you find it.

8 beautiful sunny miles on the rolling hills of our back roads this morning. I encouraged Grampa to go because I think he's spending too much time in front of the TV. He left me in the dust

Did a 46 mile ride with 14 riders, three over 75 and only one under 60 years of age. Great ride.

It was so nice this morning when I woke up (64F and no wind) that I took a very long route to work -- 38.77 miles. Made me late to work, but oh well, it was worth it and I don't think anyone noticed anyway.

Finally had a day this week to ride. It's been really raining hard here for the past three days. Got in my after work 15 mile ride at the bike path that was under water in several places.

17 miles with my group. Nice ride but now that the sun is getting lower in the sky I find that I have to remove my sunglasses in the twilight or vision gets a bit chancy in the shadow areas under the trees. Always have had 20/20 but last time I had an eye test it was 20/30. Still not bad for 76!

+1 Bluesdawg!
I rode 17 miles this evening, felt really strong holding a 20 to 22mph for over 5 of those miles.

Got up early today to ride to work but not early enough, as I realized about 2 blocks from home; no way I was going to go 9 miles and not be late for a meeting. So, turned around and went home, changed clothes and drove to work. The meeting had been cancelled. But, I had plenty of energy after work to go for a tandem ride with my wife/stoker. 11 miles.
Tomorrow I ride to work! Earlier!

18 miles this evening; temps in the low 90's with a little breeze. big big change from the normal 103+ temps over the last month. felt much better riding in the lower temps. finally broke the over 100 degree streak today at 40 consecutive days. the record was 42 days.

About 45 miles today including 36 on a club ride. Not sure of the mileage exactly, as I had big data dropouts on my Garmin (wtf?). This club ride generally attracts people who want to hammer and sprint. Today, a younger racer showed up and he wanted to pull virtually the entire ride. The rest of us were happy to let him, particularly in the first half, where he ploughed straight into a steady 12 MPH headwind at 22-23 MPH without letting up for about 8 miles . I'm pretty sure the average speed for the club portion of the ride was above 20 MPH (Garmin says 19.9 for that "lap", but is missing some of the fast sections), but it was about the easiest 20+ MPH ride I can remember - just tucking in behind the young buck hammering in front.

I had an absolutely wonderful ride today. I rode 25 miles on the Schuylkill (pronounced Skoo-Kill) River Trail (see the map at https://www.schuylkillrivertrail.com/ ). The Schuylkill River is one of the two major rivers which run past Philadlephia, Pa. I rode through Section 2 on the map and a little ways into Section 1, then turned around and returned.
We're having a period of abnormally pleasant weather for August. The temperatures have been in the low-to-mid 80's for the last two days, with very low humidity. It was delightful riding along the river. The trail was remarkably un-crowded, with only a few joggers and only two people walking dogs. Everyone else was on bikes.
I was somewhat conservative on the opening leg because I have never ridden a bike on this trail (15 years ago, I did inline skating on sections of it). After I turned around, I increased my speed considerably, and I had a really good workout the last five miles or so. This is the most I have ridden on my new bike. It was also the most comfortable I've been so far. As I have mentioned in other posts, I've been having significant problems with numbness of the hands. Two weeks ago, I took my bike to the LBS where I bought it, and the individual who sold me the bike--a gentleman who is a very experienced road rider--made the counter-intuitive adjustment of lowering my handlebars. This allowed me to ride more comfortably on the hoods (I'd been spending way too much time in the drop position.) This seems to be working--I had only a little numbness near the end of the ride, and it was significantly less than what I had been experiencing before. I still may need to tweak the handlebar position a little bit, but it is getting close to the optimum position.
All in all, a fun and productive ride.

Finished up with a 50miler yesterday. I'd set out for a metric century just for fun but had a nasty headwind most of the ride. This morning I feel like I rode a century....the 100mi kind.

Did 12 miles this AM intending to do more, however, cut it short due to impending rain and a bit of lightning. If it clears later, I'll give Skipper a call and we'll go out for a few more.

As a birthday challenge (just turned 60) I did 131 miles and was shocked to find I was prepared to continue even beyond that. I finished rolling 17mph down the road to our house. I attribute that to Heed energy drink and snacking along the way the entire time. (plus the fact that I didn't ride at training-level speed at all...just took my time)

A combination of a little rain and sleeping a little late meant I missed all the organized morning rides, so I did 37 solo miles in the afternoon, climbing some of the hills in St. Paul. Going south along the Mississippi River, I did a small climb pretty fast and at the top overtook a young guy who was hammering out of the saddle and checking out the cyclists on the path whom he was passing (we were on the road alongside the path). After the crest of the hill I noticed that he was on my wheel. I don't know why and I'm not proud of it, but for some reason I felt the overwhelming urge to drop him. So I did. It wasn't very mature of me, but there you have it.
I leave tonight for a 5 day trip to Prague. No cycling until next Friday. Believe it or not, I'd rather stay home and ride my bike than take the trip - it's not a vacation and I've been there twice before. I've been at 200-250 miles/week since late June, and I just am having too much fun riding. I guess I won't lose all that much conditioning in 5 days, but generally I'm shocked at how quickly my fitness diminishes when I'm off the bike.

17 miles today, and I'm starting feel like I did before my crash. My legs are coming back, as is my endurance. I use sprinting and climbing as a gauge - I'll sprint for 300 yards or so, and then judge my recovery and reserves. I do the same thing on hills, hitting it as hard as I can and literally swimming in the lactic acid but not backing off. I'm recovering quicker than I did even yesterday, and I still have legs after the "hammer". My mood is improving daily!!!
