On inspection, the problem was trivial, and self inflicted
Our Santana team-ti came equipped with the big bengal disk brake. This morning the caliper starts to actuate and then makes a loud click and the cable relaxes instead of squeezing the rotor. Has anyone else experienced this? Can I fix it, or should I just go ahead and order a new caliper? Is this a symptom of a broken pad? The bike has about 30,000 miles if that’s relevant.

Sounds like (1) the cable slipped in the cable anchor bolt or (2) a cable housing ferrule wasn’t seated in a housing stop until you pulled the brake lever. Either way, just loosen the cable anchor bolt, pull the cable snug, and tighten the cable anchor bolt.
