Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

First gravel ride observations

I was on a paved bike trail on my phone looking for 'the best gravel roads in my state,' but then just randomly found a gravel road that went for miles. Observations:

1. Gravel roads at least in the Midwest are everywhere

2. I loved the sound of the crunching gravel

3. Totally isolated, which I like; farms everywhere, saw ton of deer and other animals, zero cars or other bikers

4. More technical than I thought, pot holes, large sharp pieces to avoid

5. Plenty of up and down hills; for some reason, I envisioned a flat road

That's all, loved this first dip into gravel.

Sounds awesome. Wish we had more of those in the suburbs of central NJ...

Nice! Yep, the first gravel road I took my 'cross bike on, about 1.5 years ago had me hooked as well. The sound & feel of the gravel is cool like you said. Also amazed how fast rolling the cyclocross bike was compared to the dual suspension Santa Cruz I would normally have ridden on gravel roads. Out here in my area of Cali there are plenty of smooth dirt roads that have climbs, but not so many gravel roads that are not flat. In either case it is a blast though!

Few years back I was getting bored on the pavement, then I got a CX bike. That opened up miles of new fun. Had no idea of the miles of gravel road nearby until I went out out on knobby tires.
