Can't not share: crazy deal on his and hers Trek 710s

More pictures and report to come. I saw this ad for a stupidly low price (too embarrassed to say &#128563 . I figured these were a pair of 410s. Even still, a great deal, I figured I would sell one cheap and break even.

When I got there, i saw the fork crown and 531 sticker on the fork blades... definitely not a 410, but did 610s have Reynolds fork blades? Well, I check the serial number and both of them are 710s! Definite score.

They both have identical components which seem original: Cyclone MK2 derailleurs, NGC 500 levers and brakes, SR stem, seatpost and cranks, but one more surprise: the smaller one had 27 wheels with sunshine hubs, but the larger one has Gentleman 81 700c rims with Phil Wood hubs!

At this point, I shoved my money into the seller's hands. I like the idea of cleaning these up and selling them as a "his and hers" pair, but unlikely to find the right couple.

Anyway, it was no dumpster find, but a much better steal than I was expecting!

I saw that ad and I was tempted but I’m glad they found a sympathetic home.

Were you aware they were 710s?

I just assumed they had to be one of the lower models based on the price and how long the ad had been up.

I have a couple friends that might be in need, otherwise I might have to trade for something my size.

If the bigger one is 24" or 25.5", I'm curious. But it looks smaller than that.

The larger one is a 24". Not sure how tall you are, but if you're debating between those sizes, like I usually am, I have a Trek 910 in the 25.5" and it is an absolute joy. I realized I'd never ridden a correctly sized bike before and I don't think I can go back to 24".

Not to talk you out of buying a bike from me!

I wasn’t aware of the models but the seat tube decal caught my eye. The pic was terrible so the Phil hub couldn’t be seen. If I was in N+1 mode I would be shooting PMs at you but I’m paring down these days.

I have an 83 700 which perhaps followed these 710s. It is just a pleasant riding frame. Nice score.

Me too. It sounds like the seller bought them from the elderly wife after the husband passed. The guy I bould them from didn't know what he had, clearly.

Trying to think of any couples I know (short and tall) that are cool enough to sell these to that won't do horrible things to them.

Sell them separately. His and Hers sales almost never happen.

Here is my Trek 500 in the same blue or similar... i took the gents 614 and transferred the cycle parts over.. the long and the short of it is... shipping is a killer for these bikes at the values that they currently have... all my bikes i got pre -covid and pre the shipping rate hike...

614 cycle parts on a 500 frame.

I promise I will have pictures soon.

One surprise I found this morning when I tried to adjust it for a test ride was the seatpost binder bolt size. The binder is threaded, not like the pass through style, which I have occasionally seen from Trek. However, it seems that this binder bolt is imperial and not metric? I couldn't get any of my hex wrenches to fit, and it looks like it's just a tad smaller than 5mm.

Is this common? I remember running across a quill stem one time with a slightly undersized quill bolt. Got rid of that as soon as I could!

Not sure if that's something I can replace with metric? I would hate to retap it, but I use security bolts on all of my seatposts after my first (and hopefully last) stolen saddle.

Yep. Go to Ace Hardware and get an allen to fit. I can't remember: #/16 or #/32

If the OP does decide to sell them separately I'd be interested in the larger of the two.

I've owned two '82 Trek 710s, both of which required what I believe is a 3/16" allen wrench.

3/16 was correct.

I sold my 25.5" Trek 710 earlier this year or last year. I still wonder if that was the right decision. I could see myself getting another one in the future. Congrats on the two projects! Another vote for splitting up the "his and hers" for selling.

Twist the dagger a little more, wouldya?!

If I could place either of these in the frame stretcher I would. Do I need a 710 to go with my 910? Depends on who you ask.

Oof, the frame and wheels are most definitely trashed, send the whole shebang to me so I can help you dispose of it.
Those are first gen. Phil Wood hubs. Very nice, virtually indestructible.

I'll put it this way — if I'd had a 910, I'd still have a 910.
I'm assuming the Portland market is just as soft as the NYC market has been this summer. Trying to sell one bike, let alone two of the same together, is difficult
