I lurked around here for at least a couple years before becoming a member. Using this place as a research tool took care of all those where-do-babies-come-from type questions about maintenance and wrenching. Wonder how many guests are just Googlers?

At first I was a google-er. All the knowledge I sought pointed me to BF frequently.
So I signed up to participate and maybe ask a dumb question or three.
Then I learned about bikes I ain't never heard of.
Because of all this I've bought more bikes than I have room for and more projects than I have time for.
But there ain't nothin' like buying a bike someone was about to throw in the dumpster for "cheap" and making it rideable again. Or is it that I'm the only one crazy/dumb/neurotic enough to pay what I have for some of my acquisitions and buy a bunch of parts nobody else wants on ebay just to feel the wind in my face whilst pedaling an "old" bicycle?
I dunno. But I'm having fun and ya'll inspire me to finish all my projects........

The intent here seems positive, and I'll add that more people will participate as the norms and rules of this place are enforced. Not every conversation is inviting, and I lurked for several years before participating much because I realized how little I knew about the better bikes and working on them.
Also, we talk a lot about the market being soft, but I think there is an unrealized generation coming that will appreciate bicycles that were meant to last. Keep the conversation productive and positive and they'll be along shortly. They aren't *all* bots.

There is a lot of value added by members who know nothing but try things anyway. Many of us are like school boys comparing notes. "I tried this component and really liked it." Or "I had the same problem you're facing, and here are three things that didn't fix it." And so on.
I prefer talking to people who know as little as I do sometimes. They understand better why I do the dumb things I do.

And I think you hit on something that plagues the forum often. Someone will post something and there are too many quick to post that the bike is "low end" or junk. Or a new member will ask a mechanical question and they be made to feel dumb if they don't know the terminology that some self-proclaimed expert thinks they should know. New members rarely are going to want to put up with that and stay around to become regular posters.
