Perhaps 75 miles to the Northwest I made it out the last 3 days, but it was brutal. By Sunday had nothing to go on and took a cold shower to cool down afterwards. I don't know how those south of us with humidity can cycle in the summer. Luckily looking better this week.

WhyFi I finally got all of the parts and the nerve to disassemble my espresso machine and lo and behold, the three way solenoid was plugged. The boiler had way more scale in it than I would have imagined in 9 weeks.
I'm going to start using bottled water. I keep my machine in my work room in the basement and have been using water from the bathroom sink. I'm thinking the plumbing isn't hooked up the soft water and I can't check because my lines all under plaster ceilings though I guess that i could have the water checked for hardness.
Anyway, machine functions fine, now.

If you do go to bottled water, be aware that some machines don't like deionized water. IIRC, I think that it's usually the fill sensor that needs to see some conductivity or it'll think that the boiler is empty and keep cycling the pump.

Is Hawaii still afloat? Last time I looked the islands were bracing for a direct hit from H. Douglas.

Districts around here have started to release their plans, most are doing K-5 full time with 6+ going to school 1 day per week on a rotating 6 day schedule.
It’s idiotic and ass backwards in my opinion. The students least likely to keep their masks on and social distance are the ones they are bringing in full time. We take a lot of precautions to keep them safe (and us in turn) but I’m sure 50% of these kids don’t have parents as diligent as we are.

I do wonder if school closures and such will lead to a relaxation of the perceived need for parental supervision at all times that has arisen since I was young*. Daycare has largely vanished, and without school A LOT of parents are going to find holding two jobs impossible, even assuming both parents' jobs still exist.
*(I was a latch key kid before the term was even invented, with nobody but a slightly older sister for at least 2 hours every afternoon, and entire days through the summer.)

But I have to constantly fight the encroachment of Other People's Stuff. I had a nice bench to sit on, to put on helmet and shoes, but somebody put a printer on one end of it, for example.

I had three at the same time. Actually one of them was a one ton flatbed. Three trucks though. All of them farm trucks. I did no yelling.

Might be that you living in the land of 10,000 lakes are getting your water from a "surface" source and it is likely that trnsntr water source is well water. Well water will have much more hardness along with Silica compared to surface water. If that well water is also alkaline, then it could scale rather easily when heated.

Took the kids out for a ride to B&N and lunch, mostly to get them out of the house. On the way there, the boy got a little too exuberant and took a tumble when he went off the pavement and either overcorrected or had his front wheel grab that edge of the path. He high-sided, but came away with only a skinned elbow.
As we gathered ourselves together and started slowly rolling, some guy overtaking us on a road bike decided to take a shortcut through the grass rather than wait for us to negotiate the left turn. We rounded the corner just as he was hopping back on to the path about 50' in front of us, but then *his* wheel stuck and he got thrown, smacking on to the path and damn near rolling into the street. I think that there boy's bruised ego felt a little better after seeing that.
MUPs, man - they'll get ya!

Wow - surprising. Like I said, I've descaled once or twice and I've only ever used tap, but it's always gone through one of those filter pitchers, a Brita or the like (I can't imagine that those are too effective in terms of reducing mineral content), and we've lived in cities with proud water facilities.

I'm getting water from a basement sink. We have very hard water and a contractor finished our basement last winter. I'm guessing that he tapped the line going to an outside faucet which is separate from the softener. I can't check because the ceilings have been finished. I have a good friend who was head of my local water treatment facility I'll see if he can check the cold water from the basement sink for me.for me.
