My wife bought me issues of various cycling mags for my recent hospital stay. The authors are still bemused by the high price of the bikes they are riding vs the too-cheap department store ilk. But the heights are higher and the lows are lower.

Thanks for posting the photo of these beautiful bikes. The lack of color in most photographs from these early Bicycling! issues is a consistent disappointment. That should change as magazine gains traction in the coming months.

Had a Raleigh Grand Prix '10 speed' of that vintage which I bought used but looked it up and it would have sold new for $85. Surprised to see the Dawes while 531 was, straight-gauge too.

Thanks for posting these Speedo Lite... they're great. A few things that surprised me about the article 1) I did not know that hubs were spec'ed with quick releases from companies different than the hub builder. 2) I did not know that the Dawes Galaxy was marketed in the entry level price point market. I think it's a brilliant buy (a tip to my British friends there). I would have been intrigued as a purchaser back then, looking for an entry model. With a 531 tretube frame.... well, those are good bones to build from. 3) I didn't know the Galaxy came in 22 1/2 and 23 1/2 frame sizes. 4) I didn't know that those shorty fenders were just to keep the guck out of your brakes. Never really thought of them that way. 5) The reviewer didn't go gaga over the script work on the handlebars, even though that's what many people are drawn to today on these bikes. Anyways... feel free to comment on my lack of knowledge.

Enjoyed reading that. Thank you for sharing it. Perhaps the Galaxy is an "adequate" bike, but it is still special IMHO.

Another cool blast from the past. Thanks for posting. It's funny because I always remember seeing ads for Dawes in Bicycling (a bit later on), but no one seemed to sell them.
As a side note, anyone else catch the Campagnolo ball bearing specification. While it's getting late and I'm tired, that fraction more or less says Campy used grade 10 bearings. Makes perfect sense to me, as the various - it was claimed - better grade 25 bearings were never as smooth as the genuine campy ones.
