Rolling the Fat Bike

I've been riding my Fat Bike 4-6 hours a week for the last month. All on the beach and with the rear tire at 5.5 psi and front tire at 3.5 psi...rolling sand takes some effort. I'm 60 years old and an hour of sand riding gets me 6 miles! . Hardest.6.Miles.I've.Ridden. On weekends I ride 12 or more. I'm working up to 44 or so which is an up and back on our long beach. No cars bugging me, no narrow roads, plenty of open space to get in the zone.....and stay there for literally hours. I could ride for 3-4 hours and never stop, ever. Then do a u-turn and ride back. The unique character of the beach sand allows modulation to either spin or grind. A fabulous workout. Can't wait to hit the Colnago to measure the improvement!

Fat Tire Snow Biking - Video

When you get the chance, try riding the Fat Bike on snow. It's a blast. The ease or difficulty riding in snow depends on the moisture content of the snow and whether it is packed or not. I was riding on a trail (packed) made with a snowmobile and had no problem, but when I stopped and put my foot down where it was not packed, my foot sunk in about two feet deep.

This is going to be my plan for next winter (I will be 60 then). I'm building a road bike this summer and I just thought it was pushing it to try and get my dear wife to accept two new bikes in the span of a couple of months. So I'll ride the road bike all summer and into the early winter (December) when I'll hop on the fat bike and do snowmobile trails and the beach sand in front of the house.

Can't wait. Fat bikes look like a ton of fun.

I live on a river and I'd love to ride on the beach - I could go for miles in either direction. Tell me about problems with keeping sand out of the drivetrain.

I wonder when someone will adapt one of the inside the Chainstay Tube shaft drive schemes to Fat Bikes .
