Nexus 8 for touring

I know there's been a lot of talk about the Rohloff for touring, but if you had a reasonably flat tour would you attempt it with a Nexus 8?

Depends... Do you already have a bike set up with the Nexus 8? And how flat is reasonably flat?

Yes. My touring bike now has a Nexus 8 hub, with a gear range very similar to what it had when I rode it over the Rockies in 1983. Actually, the Nexus' range is a tiny bit wider. I also have it set up lower, because my riding style has, uh, matured.

I would! I'm not sure how durable they are, but I bet it would be fine, gearing wise.

Oh yes, no problems at all. I have done many short and long tours (off road/trails, Blue Ridge Parkway, etc...) with my Shimano Alfine (newer model Nexus-8). Don't sweat it. Remember that you can change the cog on it if you need lower or higher gearing. I ride mine everyday with 38/19, but when I did the Blue Ridge Parkway, I switched to 38/23.

Interesting. Personally I would find that a bit limiting at both ends of the range for touring in the Appalachians. I like a high higher than the 72 gear inches that yields and a low lower than 23.5. So IMO... yeah it probably is do-able, but not ideal. Different strokes though.

38 / 23
72.01 Gear inches
63.3 Gear inches
54.6 Gear inches
44.6 Gear inches
38.0 Gear inches
33.4 Gear inches
28.7 Gear inches
23.5 Gear inches

Bikes: "Hildy", a Novara Randonee touring bike; a 16-speed Bike Friday Tikit; and a Specialized Stumpjumper frame-based built-up MTB, now serving as the kid-carrier, grocery-getter.

Newbie resurrecting a 14 year old thread.

If you are planning for a tour, wheel size is a factor on gearing and we do not know your wheel size. Is the tour planned on flat terrain or hilly? How heavy is your load?

HI, I will be touring in Ontario Canada which has flat and steep rolling hills. The last ride I did with a 21 gear derailleur on a norco 26" with similar bike weight. I was using easiest gear at certain points to get up the inclines and hardest gear on the way down. This trip my ride is either going to be a 700c with shimano 8 IGH or a Nexus 7 on 26" wheels. I will be loaded front and back - tent, supplies, etc. for a month ride. I reckon with self around 250lbs (I'm 180lb) on bike. Thanks
