ebay prices.

Correct me if I am wrong - an individual half link is not a different product than the half links that make up a half link chain.

Correct, but why would you ever need 200 half links? Paying more for convenience isn't exactly unheard of in the modern world.

Sounds like a business opportunity for bat56 - assuming he has a chain tool...

They charge that much because people will pay that much. I agree, they should be like 50 cents.

Assuming the half link wears out with the rest of the chain, the half link will need to be replaced with each chain... so it's helpful to have more than one if the bike is getting set up that way. I want five half links.

So, yeah, some time next week I will have 195 half-links for sale according to Scrod-math.

Jesus Christ.

1. Where are you getting $6? The cheapest individual ones I see are $2.29/$2.81 with $1.75 shipping.

2. You're paying for convenience of a vendor carrying a low cost, low profit, low sale good.

3. You're shopping eBay, where any vendor with the slightest business sense is going to pass the 20-25% premium for eBay/Paypal sales to the buyer.

4. Just go ask your local LBS to have QBP throw some onto their next shipment, they generally cost less than a dollar when you get them this way.

5. Go ahead and sell your 195 extra half-links. Don't factor in disassembly time, think of it as a mind expanding exercise. Set a price you think is reasonable, acquire shipping supplies, take the time to pack and ship your items, factor extra time to deal with stupid customers (you should be real good at this one) or shipping problems or other nonsense. How many years do you think it would take to sell them all? You really think $4-5-6 is unreasonable then?

Things like half-links are a zero profit or full loss type item. The market price can generally be taken as indicative of the cheapest possible price that business can occur in a given industry.

You're totally right, buy the whole chain! But you say you only need one?

$6 < $20

You shouldn't be complaining.

Chains are getting expensive. Considering some kmc bmx chains are going for $50 now.

11 speed campy record chains are going for $77.
And a 10 speed sram chain going for $84.
Wippermann ConneX 10s1 10 speed chain going for $125

Does that $30 chain sound reasonable now?

Consider the logistical side. It costs more to send out 200 individual links than it does to send a single 200 link.

I wish I could find that picture of someone getting 100 or so screws or bolts, each in their own mail envelope.
