First day commuting will be this Wednesday

I got a road bike a few weeks ago, and the plan is to commute to work 4 days a week. I run an IT department for a small Credit Union, and on Mondays, I'm the only IT person in the office, so on those days I need to have a vehicle available in the event I need to get to another branch.

I hadn't been on a bike at all in 10+ years, but have really enjoyed the last couple of weeks of getting my legs under me again. Running is a regular activity for me, so it's not like I'm completely out of shape, but I didn't want to start commuting right off the bat. My trip is just under 15km (about 9 miles) each way. I'm really excited to get started! I did a leisurely 33km ride with a friend today, and am not feeling uncomfortable at all. I'm looking forward to saving a lot of money in gas/maintenance, and getting into even better shape!

Sounds great, John! I started just about a year ago. My commute is 6 miles each way. I went full time last Oct 1 and have lost 60 pounds. Good luck, and ride safe!

OutSTANDING!

My commutes used to be 9 miles each way; when I transferred to another location, a lot of people said, "Oh, so your ride will be shorter now, right?", like that was a good thing.

It wasn't, and it isn't.

My DIRECT route to work is 2 miles; I have mapped out routes of 3, 4, 4-1/2, 4-3/4, 6, 7, 8, and 9 miles; I take whichever one sounds good that day.

I understand what you're saying about the Monday thing; maybe it's just me, but if my job forced me to drive, I think I'd be a little resentful. (Hope you like your job better than I do MINE, LOL!)

I do like my job and they are actually being very accommodating allowing me to commute by bike 4 days a week. My job description actually requires that I have a vehicle and has been that way as long as I've been there.

Given that I run the IT department I certainly don't feel it's unreasonable that I be able to quickly get to any branch in the event an issue occurs that can't be resolved remotely. Those sorts of things are very rare but do happen from time to time.

Good luck John! My commute is also 15 km (N. Delta to Richmond) and I have to say it is the perfect distance!

Are you required to have a motorized vehicle? A bicycle is a two wheeled human powered vehicle.

My boss will loan me his car on the rare occasions I need to go somewhere. Since today is Wednesday, I guess it's to late to suggest you dry run the route on a weekend, but it's all good. Have fun. I've been doing it almost every day for years.

Well, the ride in went well this morning. The rain we were supposed to have even held off, so that was a pleasant surprise.

As far as having a vehicle on Monday's, yes, it's definitely required to be a motorized vehicle. I'm perfectly fine with taking my truck to work on that day. I have a regular early morning coffee meeting with a friend once a week as well, so having the truck that day allows me to do that on Mondays, and still get to work at a reasonable time. Additionally, it also allows me that day to schedule appointments that I might need to get to. I'm really not looking for a way to get out of having a vehicle on Mondays.

Thanks for all the encouragement!

John
