Still specking buying stuff and looking for input.
Given the tires are 33mm wide tubulars. They will be inflated 20-30PSI.

The manufacture says they work on 20mm rims to larger (did not say).

What is wrong using rims 20.5 mm wide X 25 profile vs a say 26mm wide X 38 profile in application?

I understand the cross section will be more tire everywhere, and it would wash side to side a bit more - certainly the case on pavement. But on cx, is wider that much better - and if so why?
The narrow rims are lighter, I can envision a deforming tire wrapping more around the rim, vs "flatening" onto it. It happens in both cases , but how does it matter?

Do wider rims push mud better?

Let me add...
I mentioned a lot of this is about me liking cool stuff and seeing what works best, event though I'm doing this for my kid.

So I'm looking at a light 20.5 mm setup with 33mm wide mud tires.
Something is wrong/mis-matched with that I think. If the wheels are caked with mud and the speeds are slow, what is the point of saving a few grams?
If things are dry, the light weight matters more, but thin rims squirm more than thicker ones.

My experience is that weight isnt that big of a deal in cross as long as you dont get too extreme with it. I am sure some would disagree with me. Most important to me is durability so I can finish the race. I have Veolicity Major toms, which are 23mm wide. One thing to Keep in mind is the wider the rim is the more surface area you have to glue the tire to the rim. This is fairly important since there can be lots of force on the tires especially on off camber turns, while at the same time the pressure in the tire is low, so that doesnt help hold the tire on as much. This means the more contact surface with the glue the less of a chance the tires have of rolling off in a hard fast turn. My understanding is that the velocity major toms are fairly light for an aluminum cross wheel.

yea wider is better for cross. The tread stays more consistently centered so more predicatble at lower pressures. 25mm+ is pretty common and 23mm is probably the minimum modern tubular rim I'd buy.

Got these tyres today.

For now I'm going to age them on the wood rims until they are ready. But a narrow rim might be just fine.
