rhm talked about the differences between touring and randonneuring but I think there can also be a third (fourth fifth...) category of challenge riding, which is long distance but without the randonneur framework. Bike packing races like the Trans Am follow this theme but people can do the same on a smaller, more manageable scale. Riding a century is a prime example that many aspire to as a start.

During the week I spend a lot of time looking at maps for aesthetically pleasing routes to ride and then enjoy myself on the weekends exploring them and pushing the envelope on what I can do or doing training rides to work up for longer distance.

I would say that randonneuring isn't the best way to improve your health through cycling. Regular exercise is all that is required. But randonneuring is the thing that is keeping me cycling regularly, so it all depends on what motivates you.
