2010 1000-Mile Month Challenge

Note: I know this won't fit into everyone's training plans, or life plans, and I know this will not interest everyone, so there is absolutely no pressure to participate in this challenge. If you don't want to participate in this one, that's OK. But it is do-able (I've done it many times) and may encourage some of us to get out there and ride more.

The challenge: Ride 1000 miles in at least one month this year ... or as many months as you want ... go for all 12 months if you have the time and energy!!

I know lots of you ride this amount and more during your "season", so let us know how it's going. I've posted this challenge in Bikejournal in the past, and there are a lot of enthusiastic participants over there. So I thought I'd post it here too this year.

If you don't quite make 1000 miles in a month, check out the 1000-Kilometer Month Challenge: https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...onth-Challenge

I'll go for all 12 this year. Hopefully I'll have better luck than last year.

I'm going to try for 10 months this year or, ultimately, 10,000 miles total. As I'm normally doing about 5000 miles a year, I'm going to have some work to do...

I don't plan on "giving it a try", but it appears that - if all goes well - I may "fall into it" in May. 400 & 600 km of the SR, plus an informal 200k with friends, plus - oh, gawd - Dave wants to do a Picnic on Hanging Rock the week after the 600 (the "picnic" is after doing a 50-mile tour of Pilot Mtn, Sauartown Mtn, and Hanging Rock Mtn -- short, baby mtns, but nothing to sneeze at -- heck the "little hills" in between are not to be sneezed at).

August also has potential due to a planned one-week trip the length of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

But in my case, the 1000-mile month will go unnoticed at home. The "other" has done PacTour x-country (~ 3000 in 27 days); also, RAAM qualified, but not from the PacTour.

Scraped over the line in January. I lost some time due to a chest infection, but came back with a century in the rain on the last day of the month. Final tally was 1,650km. Roll on Feb.

I'll be lucky if I can find the time to ride 1000 miles in one month, let alone all twelve, but I'll report back if I do. Whether I do or don't, I want you all to know: I'd like to be a member of your club!

I like it! Terrific challenge, and might even be possible for me this month I figure, despite work schedule and post-winter feebleness getting in the way. I'm thinking, if I manage to do my work commute, a round-trip 110km, by bike ten times in the month (can't do it every day, as it reduces the day to 1. ride 2. work 3. ride 4. eat 5. sleep), and do a couple serious weekend rides (Easter weekend is here), it's possible.

Could throw in some rides on the tandem so as not to lose the wife in the process of seizing upon this challenge.

An exciting challenge. Though as much a scheduling challenge as a cycling one.

Wasn't really trying for it, but I pulled off 1,127 miles in March. The weather has been great around here lately.

Anytime you ride a 1000 miles in a month - you can be sure you are ready to add in some intensity.

I did two 1000 mile months last year and this year had a much slower start but rode 1004 miles in April and noodled 16 miles today to get 1003 in May. My average ride was 44 miles in April and 48 in May.

I'm tempted to try a 300 or 400km brevet. Orthotics enable me to ride 100 miles without Advil. My I imaginary obstacles are 1. feet, 2. fueling so I have energy and don't cramp, 3. reading the cue sheet and navigation. 4. alert decision making.

How have the last few months of cycling been for you? It has been winter here, and not much cycling, but the northern hemisphere people have been riding all summer ...
