Any teams that aren't an 'item'?

I'm getting the impression that there are quite a few teams are in a relationship. How would one go about finding other solo riders that may be interested in forming a tandem team?

I ask primarily because my wife doesn't ride at all and my vision is failing. There will come a point in the not so distant future where I will no longer be able to ride solo.

The U.S. Blind Tandem Cycling Connection endeavors to increase the participation of individuals who are visually impaired or blind in the exhilarating sport of tandem cycling.
We serve as a resource to:
  • Connect blind and visually impaired cyclists with sighted cyclists
  • Educate people about tandem cycling
  • Disseminate information about cycling clubs, events, and opportunities
  • Address the needs of the blind tandem cycling community

Sounds exactly like the type of organization I was pondering on creating if it didn't already exist. I will go have a look at your site later- about to leave with the family for an 'outing'.

I knew a guy in NYC who would pick up women in Central Park on his tandem.

I have a friend who is divorced and has the tandem from her marriage. I told her I'd be willing to captain it for her, and she was really glad. I've had two chances to ride it with her, while my wife rode along on her single.

Oh, and I should introduce myself. I bought my first tandem today, and I'm really psyched.

If you have any schools for the blind or local/state organizations for the blind they'll sometimes hook up blind/low vision stokers with sighted captains. Here in Austin, the school for the blind and I think DARS (Dept. of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services) do that. If there are any cycling groups in your area, you might be able to find someone willing to captain for you, too.

I'm married to my normal stoker, but whenever she's out of town, I fill the back seat with subs. Obviously, the subs aren't other wives of mine. Now that we've moved to WA, I'm going to have to work on back-filling my rolodex; I'd gotten accustomed to subs who didn't need any adjustments to be made.

A few weeks ago, at the San Diego Century, I met a team on a recumbent tandem. The captain's wife did not like riding (he bought the 'bent thinking that it would encourage her to ride). The beautiful blonde stoker met the captain when he posted on Facebook, looking for a stoker. They had a successful ride.

As they say, YMMV.

Well there are tandem racing teams , use 2 male engines for the win.

your back wheel will be a popular draft by single bike riders on those long century rides.

Burly used to have tandem road races, before they were made un CoOp,
by the Bankruptcy judge.
