That subject deserves a whole separate discussion. To put it in a nut shell: It was his discipline and determination that made Lance the great rider he was, and not the "white lunch bags" (IF they really were what the French so desperately tried to prove for years!). Many riders had those white lunches, and never were heard of.
(Sorry about the thread hi-jack)

You can have a heavy cheap bike and ride it 50km in a year and not get your money out of it, or ride a 3 grand carbon race bike 10,000k per year and get 30 cents per kilometer. Then if you still have the bike the following year it's gravy.

Sadly my 15 lb bike doesn't offset the 15 lbs of muscle I've put on in the past year (weightlifiting)...
Low carb diet - the easiest way to gimp your performance. Carbs are your main fuel for cycling (only ~150-200 kcal/hr comes from fat). If you have no carbs left your body will start to consume protien (muscle) into carbs to fuel your brain. At that point you will be in severe pain and wont be able to put out 100W (bonking).

my cervelo S2 weighs 15.2 pounds and i love every second of riding on it.
also i'm 6ft, 173lbs, and i'm about to have some Domino's.

Correction: i'm about to have A LOT of Domino's.

Stop it. There's gotta be three pizza shops that are better within a two block radius.

How little do I need to eat before I hallucinate and think that an inexpensive Shimano shifter goes five cogs smaller like one from Campagnolo, to not notice the broken spokes which accompany machine built wheels, and to ignore the dings that are visible in painted finishes but not noticeable in raw titanium or stainless steel?
There are plenty of reasons to buy a nicer bike other than weight.

not really.
for wealthy people, a $12,000 bike might be no big deal. they want the best, they get the best. they don't sweat it.
for most of us, a $2500 bike is a big deal, but worth the investment.
for people of more limited means, a $1000 bike is patently ridiculous.
that's why price shouldn't enter into the discussion of bike weight. whether something is "worth it" is so subjective that it becomes meaningless.

If you expected to find a marketing ploy in this thread I have to disappoint you, or maybe relieve you.
I am not trying to sell you or point out a special sale.
What I am trying to get across is that it is quite simple to save that much money on the purchase of a top level bike. Independent of sale specials!
For argument's sake lets say that a quality road bike that weighs 2lbs less than the next model may cost you an extra $800 to $1000.
If one 180lb rider bought a 24lb bike for $3000 the total weight of bike and rider is 204lbs.
If the same rider went on a low-carb diet for a month and dropped 2lbs in weight (which is real easy to do over 4 weeks, and will stay off!) he could buy a 26lb bike for $2000, at a $1000 saving.
These numbers may be arbitrary, but that is not the issue, and hopefully, you still get the point.

My weight wasn't even a consideration in any bike purchase I've ever made. For me, it's a 100% independent issue, and there's no logical reason to tie the two together.

Not necessarily correct. Some may have to, but others may choose to. There are those buyers who want to get their money's worth, and that is a value judgment only each individual can make for himself.

For some reason most modern bikes don't have the same ideal fork rake for this any longer.
Also, braking gets a bit of a delay...

This entire thread is just another version of "I know better than you on how you should spend your money"

Descends like a rock
What if I spent more to get a bike that was heavier than some of the cheaper bikes I considered?
Also, when you save weight on the bike, it stays lighter. My bike never goes on a donut binge and gains weight back.

I'm shopping for a new bike. So are all bikes the same, except that some are heavier than others? And the heavier ones are cheaper than the same but lighter bike? Whoa, more bike for my money!!!
