Does anyone else use spare water bottles to hold gear?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Does anyone else use spare water bottles to hold gear?

On shorter rides, I can stuff 2 spares and my pump kit into a second water bottle.

This eliminates the need to carry an unsightly saddle bag or weigh down my jersey pockets.

Based on what I've seen on BF, it doesn't seem that many others do this. Why not?

Thought about it, but I'd rather have water in both bottles. Unless it's a short ride relatively close to home.

I don't mind my seatbag at all, plus my blinky is clipped to it. Don't want to switch all that stuff around depending on the length of the ride.

ErichM, where do you put that little bag? Jersey pocket?

I thought about that today - more so the "shape" of a water bottle that opened with a hinge that had a slot for a cell phone, space for keys,, ect. I think it would be a cool idea, even if it took up a water bottle slot.

get a regular sized bottle with the large screw off top. Make 2 cuts down the side of the bottle from the top almost to the bottom. After you unscrew the top, the bottle can open like a clam, to put in you tubes, tools, etc

This. Most of the rides I'm doing are longer (two-bottle) rides. The seatbag stays where it is.

Actually, if you are new here it is.

I have searched several times with no hits, then find a thread by using google.

Now, I just search google, click on the bikeforum expansion link

ETA

I have some initial threads out there I would not have started had I been doing it that way to begin with.

+1

or just the opposite: I search a subject and get 100 post that have nothing to do with the search subject.

Thanks for pointing that out in such a subtle manner. Now I think the Op is a dick and this thread sucks....

Doesn't this bag weigh down your jersey pocket?? Seems like it would pull on it quite a bit.

Who said anything about jersey pocket? As mentioned before, you don't want to know where it is placed.

In the summer I usually have water bottles in my cages. Sometimes in the winter, I'll use a purpose-made bottle-shaped thing I got at the bike shop (can't recall the brand.) It's meant for carrying tools and food or whatever, and fitting in a bottle cage.

Notice it a bit while standing, don't notice it at all riding.

Bontrager/Trek used to make one, I have one I use in my 2nd holder on rides around town. When I have one tube with me and get a flat, I usually head directly back home. With a 2nd spare I can continue my ride. I believe they used to sell it as a "flat pack" with a tube and CO2.

Soma makes a bottle just for that, $5.99 and it has a screw on lid.

There's also one called Cage Rocket:

Which is absolutely bloody awful because it's not shaped like a water bottle, being flat on the back, and rattles about like mad in the bottle cage.

doesn't seem worth the effort of taking my saddle bag off and moving the stuff. small saddle bag with tube/patch kit/multitool/levers is enough.
