Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is this lbs Deal on a new rival group really a "deal"?

Ok, so everybody says support your lbs, and while I do, and they've always treated me well, when it comes to expensive components, I've found it much much cheaper to buy off the internet.

Today I go in and ask what they can get me a new Rival group for. Later I get this response:

"sram rival shifters, derailleurs, cranks, and shimano 105 chain and
cassette. it will run $799. we really support shimano chains and cassettes
for 10speed and mixing them in with sram is fine."

Notice please that this does NOT include brakes as I want to keep my KCNC brakes. So please give me your opinions as to this price for this group. Like I said, I've never bought a group from my lbs, and this exact group, in fact the 2011 Rival 8 piece group (with brakes) I can get for $725 shipped, with my choice of sram cassettes off the internet.

So, would I pay more just to get the service my my shop?? maybe so if this were a complete group, and not mixed. I'm not really thinking this is not a deal for anyone but them.

What say ye all??

Are they willing to install for that price? then it's a decent deal. If no installation is included I'd just buy off Ebay or something and pay them to install it (unless you're gonna do it yourself, then just go online).

Not really a deal but if that price includes installation from a competent mechanic in 1-2 days, it might be worth it just for your time, unless you specifically enjoy working on bikes.

Man that is a good deal. However, I need the 175mm cranks, any idea why that price for that group set is so much higher?

It's not a good deal, but it's one that will help your LBS keep the lights on. If that's going to keep you up at night, then buy it from the LBS. If you want the best deal for your money, buy it online. I always go online for component groups because the LBS can't even come close. I don't want to waste their time or mine, so I just go straight to eBay and get the best price. I work on my own bikes and can install everything myself, so it doesn't get any easier than having it shipped to my front door.

It's always a good thing to support the LBS, but in the end if you don't need their service on top of the sale there's no need to pay a premium for something you don't use.

Yeah, I do need, and want their services. I think I'll ask them to add the sram brakes and do the install and i'll take it for $799.

since you need them to install it i say buy it from the shop. they are not ripping you off by any means. if it were me i would want srams 11-26 cassette instead of a 105 cassette. its lighter and has better gearing imo for our area. i would also choose a sram chain over shimano for the missing link but thats just me. thats only if i couldnt get a KMC X10SL chain that is.

Just install it yourself jeez. Took me only 5 hrs to build up my bike. Hardest part is getting the cable housing the way I want it but i doubt the LBS will do that for you properly either.

I don't have the tools to pull off install a BB. I've also never built up an entire group before, but it would be fun!

there really isnt anything hard about it. you do need the right tools but they would be good to have around in the future anyways. there are lots of good videos out there online and instuctions on park tools website.

what kind of BB do you have? is it a BB30 frame?

It is fun. I used to be in your boat. Then one day I realized that the money I save by buying the parts online and installing them myself could go towards the few tools needed to do it all myself. Now I have those tools forever and I find it easier and less time consuming to do everything myself. I can change a crankset + BB in less time than it takes to load my bike in the car. It's not rocket science. Also, while a work stand is VERY helpful, it's not necessary to build a bike. Good luck.

No, it's a 2009 CAAD9. So I'm not sure what kind of BB I will need, English or Italian. There's a lot I don't know, but I'm willing to try and learn.

It might even be a BB30...I know C'dale started implementing BB30 in the CAAD pretty early.

I know very little about bikes and I did it with the help of you tube. It was very easy once i realized there were 2 sizes of cable housing brakes being larger. Sram is very easy to tune follow the instructions by sramtech on you tube shifted perfect and I have not had to adjust since about 1000 miles. Every rider should be able to this themselves makes roadside repairs alot easyier.

CAAD9 would be English if you have outboard bearings (visible bearing cups). If you don't see any, then its BB30 (usually its labeled if it is).

This is the tool for outboard bearing cups: https://www.parktool.com/product/bott...ket-tool-bbt-9

You can get a Force group like that for about $800-900. I would find a better deal than your LBS and use the oportunity to learn to work and repair my own bike. It really isn't hard. Have you seen some of the kids doing the repairs in the LBS?

You are halfway there man. I had never installed a full Campag group until recently. With the basic instructions and online help it was a piece of cake. Remember in the future you'll be able to do your own servicing too.

For me, I buy online. But I have everything but chasing/facing tools and I don't need to run to the LBS and beg for help because I fubared something. What's your time worth?

No, I'm sure my Caad is not BB30. So it's English then? And front Derailleur is braise on? Or clamp?

The cool thing is that once you have the tools and have built up the bike, you'll then have the ability to keep it tuned up and not have to worry about bringing it to the LBS except for big stuff like headsets etc.
