Thank you all for the kind words.

@Well biked
The seat is a Brooks Swift (www.brookssaddles.com). On the condition of the bikes: Only not so nice bike is the '88 ValleyRunner, though functioning is great. The others are indeed in very good shape and some even like new or NOS. Nevertheless I do really ride them, but they simply do not wear so quicky as I can ride only one at a time.

@cyclotoine

"you will be able to retire on them!" you wrote

Don't think so. They are no 250GTO's or Royales and besides that I wish to ride them when retired.

Here is my old Shogun Mtn bike that I've converted into a singlespeed for winter commuting in Minnesota.
I don't know what year it is... late 80's? Steel lugged frame, Tange fork. I replaced the wheelset, added a new stem and the moustache bars & levers. Lot's of fun.

Here's my Schwinn Ned Overend Team Issue Project KOM-10, made in June 1988 in Greenville MS. I put about 15 road miles (25 km) on it instead of one of the road bikes today, because we've been having scattered showers. It's fun offroad, and it's a great foul weather friend onroad.

frame: lugged Tange Prestige II double-butted CrMo

I have two mountain bikes, but am not sure either qualifies as "vintage". Both are special in their own way.

Here's my 1991 Schwinn-Montague M1000 "BiFrame" folding MTB. It folds around the seat tube for traveling on public transportation, but is a very solid full sized mountain bike when unfolded.

Here's my 1997 Schwinn Homegrown Factory Suspension.

1994 (?) Univega Boralyn S8.9 Metal Matrix that I picked up brand new, never built up, from a shop closing in Milwaukee a few years ago for $75 cash. Not bad for a $1,200 frame that was one of the reasons the original Univega company shut down in the mid-90's.

It's built up with modern compnonents to 21.1 lbs. I have ridden it only 3 times and it is simply a rocket with very smooth trail feel. I'd love to ride it more, but it is too pretty to risk.

Thanks for the thumb-up, Luker. I have gotten at least a decade of good use from mine, after buying it from a San Diego firefighter. I customized the gear ratios, added the bar extensions and rack, and substituted the Brooks Team Pro saddle, but left everything else the way I got it.

My low-res, washed-out photo does not do it justice; it's a great-looking bike, and it is always fun to ride a red-white-and-blue Schwinn on national holidays. By the way, the evolutionary dead-end braking system (long levers, low-pivot RollerCam and UBrake calipers, under-chainstay rear brake) works superbly.

This bike is a close cousin to the Paramountain of about the same time period, correct?

I think...that the paramountain predated the KOM, but I don't have anything here to prove that - Stan or Bob would probably know exactly. I have a 1991, and it is labeled Paramount, in the same big block letters as the road bike...

By the way, I see a pair of King Stings up on Ebay - look to be nearly NOS - starting bid is $2500, though.

I'm gonna guess '83 based on the parts spec. Those are the original tires. Original everything, except for the seat. And it is in primo condition too - geez, I love that fork crown. The original seat was an avocet touring seat rebadged as a specialized, I think...I have an ad for the '82, but it doesn't have enough detail to tell for sure. I bought the blue '84 with a similar parts spec - not the Mafac brakes - and raced it for 84 and 85 (until the LBS caved in on the price for the pink '84 Team...). It was miles better than the Schwinn Sierra that I started racing on.

You, my friend, got one of the deals of the year, IMHO...

Wow, thanks for all the info! The owner of my LBS wants to trade me something for it, and I told him if he can find a good vintage road bike I may do it. But now you're giving me second thoughts. lol

Here is my 86 BRIDGESTONE MB-2. I have the original seat as well as the original wheelset with five speed freewheel. I have switched wheels to modern XT/mavic and redished so I can run the seven speed parts I have. Does anybody know if these early Shimano derailers will index with SIS correctly?

I'm really not sure what I'm looking for, to be honest. lol A couple of members' bikes come to mind:

cuda2k's Gazelle
billou's Casati

Granted, I don't expect to get something as nice as those in a straight trade, but I'm looking for something I can make that nice eventually. I also love my brother's Colnago:

My main source of info is: www.firstflightbikes.com, specifically:

https://www.firstflightbikes.com/1988_Schwinn_KOM.htm

Their Schwinn mountain bike history chart shows Paramountain production ending in 1987, with the KOM-10 replacing it as the top-of-the-line model for 1988 and 1989.
https://www.firstflightbikes.com/schwinn_specs.htm

I have read elsewhere that only about 2000 KOM-10s were made, so I'm keeping it.

Geez. Just like women I once knew. They come into your life, you race around with 'em for a few years, and then muuuuch later, you realize what you let walk out the door. I went from one of the pink Stumpjumper Teams to the KOM-10. Raced 'em for about 2 years apiece and sent 'em on their way. In 1991 I got a really good team break on a Klein, and finished my time out on the Klein. I still have it, but I wish I'd kept the other two as well (that'd kind of make me a polygamist, though, no?)

There have been LOTS of road bikes in my life, but only one mountain bike (and only one woman, for that matter ).

I just measured it and it appears to be an 18" or 19". Unfortunately, as I was measuring I noticed something looked funny with the left rear cantilever. I applied the brakes and it fell off! The brake boss broke off, so I'm assuming it was very weak in the first place because I only applied enough pressure for the pad to touch the rim. Guess I'll have to figure out how to fix it now...

I too am 5'9" and have a 30" inseam and am most happy on a 55-56 cm road frame, and a 19" mountain bike frame (depends on the bike, though). I've got a variety of road bikes, bits and complete kits if you are interested in a trade. I'd wager we could work something out. Did the brake boss come completely off of the stay or did the post come out of the squarish piece that is brazed to the stay?
