I try to keep it around around 13.5-15mph on my usual 20-30 mile rides just to keep my heart rate up but still enjoy myself. I don't have a problem doing that. I started doing this back in May of this year as a tool to get fit. I can average up to 17-18mph, but I'm miserable doing it. If I'm not enjoying myself, what's the point? I won't be having fun, I won't be getting the bike on the road, and I'm not using it to increase my fitness level.

I've know'n a few people who go and buy a flashy new bike with the aim to get fit. They've tried to always improve by getting faster all the time and riding further but end up giving up and left there bikes gathering dust.
I've been getting back into cycling after spinal surgery for the last 4 or 5 months and really just have a feel for how much effort to put in so I'm getting stronger but not beating myself up. As said earlier by another person there's to many variables to compare one persons average speed with someone else.

My experience is similar to most of the posters here (but the fastest speed I've hit was 32 mph and I didn't like going that fast). On one-hour rides I'll push myself but on longer rides I pace myself and take rests. So I figure rides over two hours I'll average 10 mph (that's with breaks built in). It's about right and makes for easy estimating.

When I go riding with my kids, we usually travel about 12-14 miles at a fairly leisurely 10 or 11mph pace. When I'm out solo, I'll typically take a 18-20 mile route, and average 13.5 to 14mph. This generally involves putting in a borderline-uncomfortable amount of effort for me, and while I may not have the physique and stamina of a 20-year-old gymnast, I'm also not particularly out of shape.
So, like many others have stated here, I too view some of these posted average speeds with more than a bit of skepticism.

My ride yesterday from runkeeper - 22.45miles, time 1:32:04, avg speed 14.63mph, Total climb 807ft. It said it was my 3rd fastest time from 16-29 miles.
I'd post a pic but that seems impossible from an ipad.

On my daily workout ride of 14 miles, I've been averaging 15.1 - 15.6, though I hit 16.1 a couple of times.
This Wed. I rode a 25 mile course with a friend and finished with an average speed of 14.6.

My average speed is getting better and better. Yesterday was my best on a ride over 15 miles. I rode 16 miles in 1 hour 11 seconds, fastest mile averaged 20.3 MPH and slowest was 13.2 on a rather hilly ride. Stats are per map my ride

I have what I would call a true hybrid. Aluminum frame, shocks in the forks, shock in the seat post, 700x40 tires, straight bars. 21 speed, I average on a 15 mile ride about 15 mph. Up and down big hills. 12 mph on a 25 mile ride. I ride more on a stand. I Average about 15 mph on it too with a lot of tension to duplicate my riding area. I can average 18 mph on flat road, but I don't have much of that where I live. Lol Good topic!!

My average is probably 10 to 12 mph on my daily commute. I don't want to arrive gassed and sweaty. Plus I only started this recently, so I'm not fit at all.

Funny story the other day ... I know it sounds like a story just to brag but still I found it funny and so I'm gonna post it anyway.
I was home early from work and so I decided to take my kid for a ride to the playground a few towns away ... it's both fun for my kid and exercise for me so perfect for both of us. On the way back I stopped by the local pub next to the church (going to church and riding bicycles is mostly an excuse for drinking around here) and had a nice old style uniquely brewed for this pub Belgian triple.
On the way back, I saw a few roadies riding on their nice roadbikes just in front of us ... they were about my age maybe just a bit older ... it could have been the after effects of the beer or maybe that's just me but I must say I was quite excited to notice that I was actually gaining terrain on them on the flat.
Then after a mile or so ... the big hill came along ... I was pretty close to them at that time and was quite certain I didn't stand a chance since my bike weighs 13kg and my kid with bikeseat weighs about 15kg more.
So the hill came and I cranked it up a bit to about my max ... soon after I rode right past them ... I couldn't resist knodding my head at them in a friendly manner while passing ... the looks on their faces were priceless

I added clipin pedals, and changed my cog. Geared a little better for the road. Doing my first club ride tonight. A 22 mile ride. I'm prolly going to be the only hybrid in the group. I will post top speed, and average tonight.
i hope I can hang with these guys....

My bike is a steel hybrid fitted out for touring w/fenders and front/rear racks, 700x40 tires. I'm 62, returned to pedaling about a month. My avg spd has been 12.5 on 24 mile rides until recently, when I extended some rides to 33-36 miles, still at 12.5. Terrain is rolling hills, top pedaling speed on the flats around 18-20. Now the 23-24 milers are averaging 13.6, so I must be getting into better shape. Ride data from wired Schwinn computer. There was a front coming through today so I guess I had a tail wind for the first part, but a head wind for the middle part, and it rained on me the last six miles. Riding more is better, but I mix in a rest day here and there and do a short ride the day following a long ride, and gradually build back to a longer ride.

My average speed is between faster than I can walk, and faster than I can run.

My grandson is too young to be on the internet, so he asked me to post on his behalf. He says his average speed is a billion trillion quadzillion miles per hour.

I am extraordinarily slow -- kids on push scooters could probably overtake me. Practically any wind or grade can get me huffing and puffing. But I'm riding a comfort bike, haven't ridden a bike in years, and was never "in shape" to begin with. As long as I don't grind to a halt or pass out, I'm happy.
