Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Sunday Ride (Nov. 23rd, 2008)

76 miles solo as usual. Very good ride today. Weather was decent, but I could have done without the 20F degrees swing or the 15 MPH wind. Despite that, it was a good ride.

Sometimes little things just put it in perspective. Midway through the ride, I stopped in a convenience store to get some water. While I am sitting outside chewing on a PB, I see this old lady pull up to a pump. She gets out with her cane. She must be at least 85 y.o. She walks from her car to the register inside to prepay for the gas. She is very unsteady on her feet, with a weak gait, and relying on the cane heavily. That small walk must have felt to her like climbing Mt. Everest. She then walks back out to her car struggling just the same, pumps gas, gets in her car, and drives away. After the instant initial though of hundreds of people like her driving around me here all over the place, the idea of this very elderly and weak woman fighting to keep her independence and self reliance just stuck with me. To me that was HTFU at its best. You go girl........

How was your sunday ride?

I 'wussed' out from riding outside in the cold. It was 22 degrees at 9 am when I would have gone out. Went back to sleep and woke up at 11. Intervals on the trainer for an hour.

I think the schedule for winter training will include easy to medium intensity longer rides outside and harder structured rides indoors. Windchill when it's 18 degrees outside and you're going 22 sucks...
I have a balaclava but I can't see when I breathe hard through it haha.

It's supposed to be 47 tomorrow, I wish I could ride!

19 miles. It was 19F (-7C) when I left. I was planning on much farther, but I could not get comfortable. Turned around and went home to warm up. Nice and sunny, though a bit windy.

About 64 miles with some spirited moments...one of the guys on the ride was a monster...after pulling everyone at a fierce pace for a pretty good length...we came to a red light, and, then, after it went green, he took off...someone said "go get him gingo" (which I recognized as a quote from Belov in from American Flyers)...I said "let's go"...I actually bridged up the 40 yards or so, hung on a bit and then fell off...when I looked back, everyone else was way way back...monster I tell ya, monster....per usual, I'm not sure where we went, but, someone said at one point along the way that we were on a spirited part of the Progress Coffee ride...the pace picked up a bit on this bumpy 1-2 mile road...

~22 miles. 20F w/ 10-15mph winds. very sunny, but my toes got nipped by the end, despite two pairs of socks and the Lake winter shoes.

28 miles, 40 degrees, wicked winds. But so much nicer than the trainer in my basement. Oh, and I fell off my bike for the first. The audience loved. I unclipped left then tilted right.

50 miles. Great weather, 65 deg., no wind, overcast. PCH to Balboa Island, across on the ferry and back home. Mostly easy/base with a few hammer zones....solo.

25 miles, 1500+ ft of climbing....very foggy & cool here in North County. I'm off this week for Thanksgiving so I dogged it a bit this entire weekend. My grand plan for riding my butt off this coming week might be for naught as RAIN is forecast off and on the next few days .......geeze!

Nice observation dgasmd.

Still no riding for me. week 4 after rotator cuff surgery and still in pain.
The bike on the trainer stare back at me every day but I still don't have the courage to ride it.

27 miles for me and my first real ride on my new asthma meds.

Since this is California, and it was <55 degrees when I started, I had my full leg pants on, and a jersey jacket. By 10 am it was about 70 and I was getting hot.

Anyway, it was a fantastic ride. Tackled some medium sized hills without stopping once. Averaged 16.1 miles out to a local lake.

My new asthma meds are working great. Off to send a note of thanks to the Doc!

Did a new route today. But I've come to realize I cant get away from the hills and traffc signals. Still got in an easy 45 miler inside the perimeter with 3-3.5kft of hills.

Cant wait for the flat lands and warm temps of south GA later this week.

Temp was cool at the start but it warmed up nicely by the time I got home.

80 miles with one other teammate. Started off 29F, ended around 52F. We were both wearing short finger gloves because we don't own full finger, and it was gonna get too warm for the lobster gloves. So our hands were freezing at the beginning.

Pace was a little faster than I do solo, but it wasn't bad. Still in the base zone, but barely.

Puts me at 235 miles (16 hours) for the week. Base coming along nicely.

43 cold windy miles. About 20 miles into the ride my hands and feet started to go numb, the last 20 miles were a lesson in survival, pure pain and suffering with no place to stop for a hot coffee and to unthaw my hands and feet.
Still, I was glad I did it. Riding this late in the season around here, with no snow or ice is a bonus (well there were ice patches galore and Mt Wachusett had top to bottom skiing with lots of people taking advantage of the early season conditions).
Coming home to a hot cup of coffee never felt so good!
Time to pull out the winter socks and riding gloves.

Sunny ... no snow anywhere ... light winds ... +2C ............. and a nice little 20 km ride.

I had to get back early to work on my Art projects ... and to see how much time it might take to learn enough asp to create a 'contact me' form.

Thirty-four slow miles in the low to mid thirties with ice and snow patches on the road. Bah, the trainer is just better this time of year.

The trainer is NEVER better than riding on the road.... sometimes though it's the only option.

Typical Sunday ride with my racer buds. It was cool at the start (about 50 F) and we planned to ride into the wind at the beginning. It warmed up nicely and I was even able to ditch my jacket at my wife's office in Alachua as our ride went right past it.
