Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How many of you lost your SO because of cycling?

Hate to ask, but it's a logical corollary to https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=495837

I have not, yet, had this happen. I train exclusively for TTs, so my rides are (relatively) short in number and length and not as much a potential problem as they might be for the MegaMilage/addict types.

Not yet, but she is threatening. She says I am obsessed with cycling. I told her it is better than drugs, alcohol, or gambling....

luckily, i have not - but if i tried to do 15k+ miles in a year, i think i'd be pushing it. (unless i woke up really early, screw that)

hell, i feel like i ride too much as it is (~8k this year). the other part of it for me is that during the summer one ride can last a day or longer.. and that can strain a relationship. but so far so good.

The smart women learn that a guy is going to be obsessed with something, so might as well support a healthy obsession.

On our first date, I showed up at my wife's apartment on a bike, and she had to drive for the date. I think she had a pretty good idea how things might go for the next 20 years. She's quite supportive as long as I'm reasonable.

The girl I was dating when I took up cycling, bailed out...

Many people have met their SO through cycling, keep that in mind.

If she (or he) is not supporting your passions, or if she (or he) is not able to share with you in these passions to the point where it becomes a division, you may want to consider making the cut rather than letting it bleed.

Of all the addictions out there, this is perhaps the healthiest addiction any person can have... except on the wallet, unless you're smart about it.

Side note: I met a couple at the top of Mt. Wilson yesterday. They are triathletes that met while training... and are slowly becoming roadies (heh heh heh). Anyway, in my usual non-chalant fashion I said "I bet the sex between you two is amazing." After a very brief pause, the female of the couple said "Yes, yes it is. Better than anyone I've ever had the pleasure with before."

How many of you lost your SO because of cycling?

My wife is pretty understanding when it comes to taking time away from family to ride (though it makes her crazy when I have the windows open when it's 15 degrees out and I'm on the trainer). What makes her a bit less understanding especially these days are my spending habits when it comes to cycling. Luckily the 6 yr old gets it...

When my son was that age I put a kid-back kit on the tandem and we would ride together. Great times.

Awesome picture. That kid will save your marriage...lol.

"But mommy, daddy needs these new Carbon fiber wheels."

But regarding the op's question. I'm single. I wasn't into cycling when I was with my ex but there were other things she just didn't get or support. Like my photography and camera equipment obsession. Nothing like a red ringed lens or a couple.

I can't say my marriage ended because of cycling and my obsession with bikes. I can say that it didn't help.

Of course, the "other man" in our relationship didn't help either.

It definately puts a strain on things, that's for sure. Especially during the season when I get a lot of "we don't spend any time together because you're all consumed with riding your bike".
I try explaining how it's a passion, big FAIL on that one, she thinks I love my bikes more than her. No, I just happen to spend more time with them from April through October.
I suppose it would be less stressful if she had a passion, or a hobby even.

I'm walking a fine line... 5 year old at home. Baby girl due in May '09. First year of racing in Spring / Summer coming up and need to train hard. It's a constant balancing act at my house... family / riding / job / etc.

It had something to do with why my relationship ended.

But I think it was a distant reason to everything else that contributed to things not working out.

Live and learn.

I'm sorry, but once I met you I just couldn't quit you Rad!

I can't say that I lost any of my wives or SOs due to 'only' cycling, though cycling did bring me my latest.

Nope. My wife rides too. She supports my habit too, especially since I dropped near 60 pounds.
