Who uses quick release for cross?

Mine is QR... too old for Thru axle. For many having a set of wheels in the pit vs another bike is their only option so being able to swap quickly is good. (i'm lucky and my GF rides the same size so we pit each other's bikes for our races)

Yea but that is on a sponsored world champion's bike. Typically he would be paid to stick with a brand, not configuration (Like some Spec riders on Tarmac, some on Venge - rider chooses).
I don't think he is paid to choose quick release. Maybe he is.

Edit Add: I noticed in the race in Denmark (today?) he had thru-axles.

I ride/race QR. I havent had any problems riding them. I know some people talk about their wheels shifting, but I havent experienced this at all.

Those do not look to be QR. That is the bike I was referring to from the weekend's race.

Mine is QR, I don't think for pros it matters, because the advantages for thru axle are only in keeping alignment when you take the wheels on/off and they have mechanics for that. In race changes are full bike swaps. I don't buy the marketing about stiffer axles etc. Sure Thru-axle is nice and any new disc bike I buy will have them but it isn't a deal breaker

Ya, that camo paint was his old bike.. I wonder why he was on it. The Red/white is from Denmark race and has 12mm Thru axle. Maybe his main bikes were being shipped and he rode the old one in a non world cup race?

I'm not debating the facts of what we both see. As a guy new to this, I'm not clear on why so many hub standards are needed. Then I can say the same about BBs in road and everything else. I suspect this is more marketing than anything else.

Thru axle & Carbon, is now the latest thing for you youngsters .. you see the top level people with a whole spare bike (or 3).

that solves the slow wheel replacement, just grab the spare bike from your helpmate in the Pits.

I see zero performance advantage with through axle on a cross bike.

With that said, it does make sense on a new bike since much of the newer stuff (frame and forks) are through axle and the standard is going that way. I'd go through axle so you know that you have something that is up to date and relevant for at least a few years (before they change it again).

I'm confident you put any top pro on his cantilevered bike with QR's (mind you this was just 3-4 years ago!) he'd keep up just fine in any top level UCI race with any of the newer gear.
