Will a 7 speed wheel work on an 8 speed shifter?
I have a campy Athena which has an 8 speed wheel.
The wheel is having issues and wondering if a 7 speed wheel set would work ?
Or even a 6 speed ?

I've done it with good results. 8 speed ergo shifters and a 8 speed Racing T derailleur, and a 7 speed freewheel. Rode it for at least a couple of months with no issues.

I have one set up on one of my bikes, it works without issue. You have to reset your derailleur stops and thats it.

You can just add some washers to the locknuts to space a 126mm Shimano hub to 130mm. You'll also need a longer axle and quick release.

You are talking about 1/8th inch difference. The rear frame will flex a little to accommodate the difference. No spacers needed.

It came with the wheel shown, but when I take it out and out it back in, I have to spread the back slightly. I put a 6 speed wheel I had to see how it would fit.
Fits perfect,.
No spreading of the frame, so maybe that would be best for a 7 speed ???
My friend has a set of Campy wheels complete 7 speed . I think I will go that route.
I really do not care about 8 speeds vs 7.
I mean....how many gears do we actually use riding **********

What seems to be the problem with the original 8s wheel?
Using a 7s freewheel will allow allow use of Hyperglide cogs that will greatly improve shifting performance over your current 8s Sachs/Maillard 8s freewheel.

The 8s wheel could NOT be " trued" I was told by a bike shop, so I acquired a 7 speed wheel set Shimano cassette for " short money"
I have a Campy wheel set coming from a friend of mine in a few weeks as well
AND...I brought the wheel to my friend who used to OWN the bike shop, and HE TRUED IT at his house !!!!!
I will keep as an extra. I am going with the 7 speed.
Really like you comments on smoother shifting !!!!

The "stops" are set using the limit screws on the derailer, keeps the chain from riding past the end-mounted sprockets.
