Builder to do an aluminum repair near Long Beach Ca.

Thought I give this old thread a bump and have new builders add their names to the list. Also, I'm looking for a builder/welder to repair and do a little fabrication to strengthen the crack in BB housing of my Raleigh SC Tandem AL.

Thanks,
Cole

That's a horrible detail. Not surprised it failed there.

Please explain "horrible detail?" Trying to learn. I'm not knowledgeable about tandems at all. And what's that rectangular looking piece on the bottom bracket shell?

Everything is putting stresses right at the edge of the weld -- set screws, pedaling stresses, the weld itself. Most of these that I've seen use a split shell with tension binders (like what's used on a stem).

I did something similar on my tandem and I was always embarrassed about it. But nobody can see it and I was in a hurry to get the bike on the road. On mine, it's just a couple of nuts though, not that huge bar.

The issue with this Raleigh is that it's a very poor detail for aluminum. The normal method of using seat clamps would be far better. I suspect this bike is a write-off.

I split this thread off from the 11 year old thread.
