Not trying to sell this for this guy, but was wondering about his claims. Ritchey design/Bridgestone made...
https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/bik...168367241.html

1985 Schwinn High Sierra:made by Bridgestone Japan, 21" - $725 (oakland lake merritt / grand)

image 1 of 17
Frame (Ritchey frame design): 4130 chrome-moly tri caliber main tubes, 4130 crome-moly stays, forged double eyelet dropouts, tange new falcon sealed headset, 21", Made in Japan!, WB=109.4cm, jet black
Wheels: rims Araya 7X alloy (26x1.75), hubs Shimano Deore XT, alloy, large flange, 36H S/S 14G, sealed bearings
F&R derailleurs: Shimano XT, Shimano LX Exage 300
Brakes: Diacomp 980 alloy, Diacomp mountain levers
Cranks: SR SAC-310 forged alloy: 175:48/38/28, new OMNI Racer Square Taper Cromo Steel Bottom Bracket
Freewheel: Suntour PT-5000: 32-14T
Seat/post:Serfas, SR CRE-100X (Sakae Two way quick release adjustable saddle, longitudinal adj)
Shifters: SunTour micro lite
Pedals: SR touring
Handlebar/stem: SR aluminum alloy
Extras: Rear rack w/ "Rack Mate"(rare), water bottle holder, Double kickstand to stabilize a loaded bike!
The bike has been completely overhauled: new brake and shifter cables, upgraded bottom bracket (sealed bearing), dis-assembled, de-greased, polished aluminum, lubricated, reassembled, tuned.
This is a solid all-terrain machine made when mountain bikes just came into being. They are typically over engineered, over built with the highest quality components, and therefore, made to last. This is a rare survivor

BS...the Fisher Montare at $385 is a way better bike that even though also Japanese will hold its value better in long run.

Zaskar LE

Zaskar LE (?) that I bought from an old room mate. ball burnished frame, and funky NoLeen forks. stolen in a move from east coast to west coast, never to be seen again! The guy I bought it from "told" me it was his team bike.

Bikes: Wow, where to start? A collection of 1980's and early 90's road, touring, and MTBs from the likes of Trek, Schwinn, Cannondale, Fuji, Miyata, Univega, Panasonic, and GT. It has gotten rather out of control.

From what I have seen, the High Sierra was made by Giant in Taiwan for Schwinn. The only Ritchey design in it is that like all mountain bikes of that era, they were all derivative of the design Ritchey and other pioneers introduced before mountain bikes were mass produced.

Any of you remember these??? Before the High Sierra/Sierra (and thus also before the Paramountain), Schwinn sold Mtn Bike framesets in the early 80s. My brother bought one, the initial version that was not lugged, and during a ride BOTH the top tube and down tube snapped off at the head tube...luckily he was OK … he likely had grounds for a good lawsuit but things were quite so litigious back then. Schwinn sent him a replacement frame, the next version which was lugged. He crashed it at the first or second Rockhopper and bent both the top tube and down tube at the head tube...but it didn't break, a bit of an improvement. We had cut our teeth on converting Schwinn Cruisers into offroaders and had crashed those with little effect to the bikes...these early Schwinn Mtn Bikes were quickly shelved and replaced by the High Sierra/Sierra a few years later. A guy has one of the early lugged bikes for sale on the big auction site right now (I borrowed his images).

Somebody recently started a thread about his early Schwinn MTB he couldn't identify, maybe 4-5 months ago. I bet it was made from one of these ^^^^^ frames.

So what year is that catalog page from?

I think it is just time frame the RollerCam brakes were 1985-1986 then in 1987 when Ubrakes came out they took over.

All of my 1985-1986 MTB's have RollerCam brakes
1985: GT Backwoods, Ritchey Ascent
1986: Fisher Montare , Trek 850

Interesting about the 850, '86 was the only year for the roller-cam. I had an '87 20+ years ago (now I'm kicking myself for selling it; "not into MTBs" back then ), which had the U-brake "down there".

My '87 Schwinn High Sierra, and two others I've seen, have roller-cams front and rear (seat stay mounted, however).

That was a somewhat popular OEM seatpost in the early 80s. Not terribly useful, really heavy, and wasn’t all that secure..

Very nicely done.

Back in '89 or so, I almost picked one up. Browsed around a really great, small dealer's floor stock ... and there it was. About 2" too big for me, though. But, dang! if that thing didn't climb straight up a loose-pack dirt hill that was ~40 degrees or so. Just put it into low gear, and it went right up. Never lost traction. Was duly impressed with the overall ride quality, as well. Back in the day, I think they were about US$1150 or so.

Enjoy. Of course, I'm sure you will.

Klein Mission Control.... finally

So I bought my Pinnacle in 1990, always wanted the Klein bars never did them🙄 Found a 1st gen bar no txt it needed a little touch up and shot a clear coat on it. Thought I would show the weight weenies a couple pics. Original 1989 Tioga “Tbone” stem and bars vs the Klein. Same width, reach Klein has a longer insert.
