Hi all,

I bought a Kestrel RT 1100 105 2019 model from Wiggle last year, nice looking bike, out the box I had a small issue but it was resolved straight away, although riding it I've never really been that happy with it but it's "done the job"
I've cycled about 500 miles in the 15 months I've had it, I've used it as my second bike.

Yesterday I was cycling up hill to a set of traffic light, I stopped and just as I was about to pull away the pedals went round the the bike didn't move!, I suspect the hub, I took it to my local bike shop straight away and they said they have never seen anything like it, the words were cheap import?
They are going to try and repair but I feel a hefty bill coming my way or they will say I need a new rear wheel, I have since found out the wheel I would need has a 135mm thru axle which turns out isn't standard?
Which means I cant just buy a set from Ebay or the likes to get me moving.

Another problem I have, separate to that bike. I have an old bike I used on my turbo trainer which the 8 speed Sora derailleur has just broken..the tension has gone, can I buy any 8 speed derailleur to replace or does it have to be identical?

Any 9-speed or below Shimano or compatible mountain derailleur, or 10-speed road, will have the correct cable pull ratio for your 8-speed shifter. See "Derailleur Ratio" in the 4th chart: Science Behind the Magic | Drivetrain Compatibility ? Art's SLO Cyclery

Have you checked into the Kestrel warranty. Is it 1 or 2 years?

You can search the web and find issues with the Oval Concepts 524 wheels. It would be worth your while to contact Kestrel.

What what I read, it is a decent bike with 105 components.

Problem might be that AFAIK Kestrel was part of the Performance, Nashbar etc conglomerate that went bankrupt, so lots of luck with the warranty (if there was one).

If you end up needing a new real wheel, don’t fret the 12x135 rear hub. 12x142 is the current road ‘standard’ but while wider numerically, in practice both hub standards place the disc and cassette in the same spot. The difference is that frames designed for 12x142 hubs have 3.5mm pockets on both sides of the frame for the hub to sit in while installing the axle. Convenient but not necessary.

So absolute worst case is you buy a 12x142 wheel and find a machine shop to cut 3.5mm off either side of the end caps on the hub. Or more likely, you buy a 12x142 wheel and get the appropriate end caps from the manufacturer to convert it to 12x135.

Hi John,

I have looked at the paper work that came with the bike, Wiggle give a 12 month Guarantee but I did find SRAM give a 24 month warranty. although getting hold of them if another matter.

12 months is a typical for components on new bikes..

go back thru the bike shop for those issues ..

Brick & Mortar shops are better for service after the sale..

I have emailed them and will be chasing it up tomorrow, the issue I have is knowing the bike shop who have the wheel will say they can't fix it and will tell me I need a new wheel which is something I can do myself.

I've had freewheels fail to engage before. You got lucky, mine put me on the ground.

You shouldn't need an entire wheel, just the freehub.

Whether you want to fix the existing freehub or upgrade to a wheel you trust is a different question.

Are you a bigger guy? All the bigger guys I ride with eventually kill their stock rear hubs and have to upgrade to something beefier like DT Swiss, Hope, I9,,,,,,,

I honestly think it's down to poor quality.
I've fixed my spare bike so I can still ride at the weekend, I've started a warranty claim.

I also came up with the Oval 524 wheels listed for that Kestrel. Their warranty says 2 yrs if no luck from Wiggle or Kestrel. Page 10 https://www.ovalconcepts.com/docs/ma...eel_Manual.pdf OP's weight of 13 stone (182 lbs.) is not that heavy by British/USA standards. The wheel should be able to handle it no problem.

Turns out Wiggle don't want to know, they have basically told me where to go, saying most hubs on any wheels only have a 90 day warranty.
year and tear, I guess being 15 months old it could be but it has only done 500 miles.

So I could fight and I'll probably get nowhere or just accept defeat and pay my way. . I have bought a new set of rims, cost of £200 so not too bad but it turns out it's a 142mm thru axle and not a 135! So I could of bought a cheap wheel.

Anyway, I want to repair my other wheel and replace the hub myself seeing as I've bought most of the tools now.
question: how do I take the hub off a Oval Concept 524 disc rear wheel ?

I weigh over 100 kilos, never had an issue with breaking hubs. the one that went bad on me was a near new, $65 USD wheel, i.e. cheap.

Again you don't need a new hub, just a new freewheel mechanism. In fact, you could probably disassemble and properly lube the existing freewheel mechanism and it would work again. But in the interest in keeping all your teeth and testicles, better to substitute a quality hub.

Dud = Unexploded Ordinance .. careful in handling what comes up plowing those old battlefields.

Thank you. I may be getting a bit confused with what a hub is then, the hub I refer to is left on the wheel when I take the cassette off.
on my new wheel once I take the cassette off I can just pull the hub off but with oval concept it don't budge.

I had to buy a short cage Sora derailleur.
