10 speed shifters with 9 speed mtb derailleur

Iím sure this has been answered somewhere in the forums at some point in time. I have a pair of ultegra st-6600 shifters and am looking to use them with a 9 speed mtb derailleur. Hoping to put an 11-34 or 11-36 on the rear. Anyone have any ideas as to what Specific derailleur and cassette I will need (looking to spend somewhere around $40-$70 on derailleur and $60 max on cassette)? I have a single 40t chainring up front. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

This Deore M591 seems to be what is still readily available. https://www.universalcycles.com/shop...70&category=72. Max cog is 34T. Here's a good price on an LX cassette. https://www.universalcycles.com/shop...1&category=534

I have found a good deal on an XTR RD-M952 Long cage and itís before dynasys and shadow clutch. Does anyone know if this will work with my ultegra st 6600 levers and an 11-36 cassette?

AFAIK none of the 9 speeds were rated above 34T. That doesn't mean you couldn't use a 36T in your application. It would be trial and error.

Would the aforementioned XTR Derailleur at least work with the shifters?

Yes. Any 9 speed MTB rear derailleur will work with your 6600 shifters. You can also be confidant it will work with a 34T cassette.

I've never tried this particular combination, but I've never had a problem exceeding the "max cog" specification of a rear derailleur by two or three teeth, and I've done it a bunch of times. Sometimes you have to crank the B-screw all the way down, if you're going for maximum clearance or the derailleur hanger is on the short side.

(And, no, they're not all the same length, and every manufacturer will tell you, with full documentation and a clear conscience, why theirs is the ideal length. Standardized dimensions? On a bicycle? Up with that we shall not put.)

Downshifting onto the larger cog is supposed to be marginally slower, and less likely to work under heavy pedaling. Since I won't do that even if my drivetrain will let me, I don't see this as a big downside. And I've never been able to notice a difference anyway. Every bike I've done this to has shifted equally well before and after.

Try it... I think it'll work.

A 9 speed Deore RD-M592 SGS will go to a max cog of 36t.

I am using both 105 and Ultegra GS rear derailleurs with 10 speed brifters and 11x36 on 3 different bikes.

I used to run a 9-speed derailleur on my X-Caliber 29er, which had a 11-36 10-speed cassette, because no one made a low-normal 10 speed derailleur. Not sure if that's changed since then, but probably not. In any case, I had to get a Tiagra flat bar road shifter because the 10 speed mountain shifters used a different pull ratio. Didn't have any issues with the 9-speed derailleur and 11-36 cassette.
