Here are a couple of pictures I took the day I brought it home from Performance. I've made some changes since, but haven't taken new photos.

I had a 46/17. Felt nice, not too bad.

A little tough on the hills around my neighborhood though. when I go out on flat longer rides I use a 48/15 (On my current bike)

You'll be fine with 46/16 unless you haven't gotten used to it yet haha

Scooper, did you take those guides off of another bike? I have an old Bridgestone with those style clamps, don't know if they would fit though, the Maddy is pretty hefty. Thanks!

The only guides I've been able to find are for either 25.4mm diameter tubing or 28.6mm diameter (OS) tubing. The Sprint has a 31.7mm diameter top tube and the 28.6 guide was too small, so I used a 28.6 guide as a template and fabricated a 31.7 guide from thin gauge stainless steel by making it longer. Here are the 28.6 guide on the left, and one of the 31.7 guides I made on the right.

Scrod may be right about them being available, but I couldn't find any.

Nice job on the guides. I'll have to investigate that option, sure looks a lot classier than the black guides. I love the stem and the seat on the Sprint, very nice touches.

BTW, nobody is chiming in on suggestions to cover up the dented chainstays on the Madison. I have investigated a little and am wondering if the leather chainstay protectors from Salsa, Surly, etc. would be stiff enough to cover? I also say one that looked (for lack of a better description) like a spiral phone cord. Any other ideas come to mind?

Is there any way you could remove the tape (or whatever it is you've got covering the dents) and take some close-up photos of the dents with a ruler to give some idea of the size of the dents?

TugaDudes regrettably dented chainstays

scooper, the dents on this side are more on the middle to bottom of the tube. The dents on the non-drive side stay are more on the top of the tube and hence more obvious.

BTW, the middle photo shows the problem the best. It is sort of an undulating series of "dents". The blue painted section on the opposite stay is more like it was hit with a ball peen hammer. I believe that the original owner had it chained up and somebody tried to pull it off of the chain or something stupid like that. There was also damage to one spoke, which is consistent with that theory if the guy had some chain or cable looped through the back wheel.

I agree with your assessment that the damage was probably caused by someone attempting to steal the bike. It's a damned shame, but since chainstays are in tension (rather than compression) while riding, the damage appears to be more cosmetic than dangerous.

As far as disguising the damage is concerned, if it were mine I'd probably try to cover it with thin sheet stainless formed to the contours of the stays and secured with something like P-clips or small stainless hose clamps. It seems to me that would stand up better to the elements than organic materials like leather.

Good point Scrod. You would have to know me, I am very meticulous, or at least try to be. I'm actually trying to get over it. Took her for about a 25 minute ride today and I'm impressed. It is not super lighweight, but climbs like a champ. I have a small hill on my street and I got some speed going as I approached the hill and just cruised right up. Having spent 99% of my time on geared bikes lately, I'm happy to have a change and I'm thinking this is going to be a lot of fun. The direct connection to the bike is hard to describe, but you know it when you feel it and it feels pretty cool.

In my most modest, humble, personal opinion, the twine just makes the situation worst by directing all the attention to the the chain stays instead of the frame. That said, I wouldn't even worry about the dents, I think scars on frames give a lot of character to the frame itself and you should embrace the dents.

OT: I just read 18 pages of pages dedicated to one bike and I must say how refreshing it is to see a tread stay focused, be incredibly helpful to those with questions, and show the love at the same time. Nicely done ladies and gents! My additional compliments to Scrod for sticking with a tread he started even after moving on to a new bike. Great community.
