It's not like cars where you have a published # of each make and model in manufacturing reports. It was a mildly popular frame at the time in the jack-of-all-trades niche, now occupied by Surly LHT / Disc Trucker or Kona Jake variants. They don't come up all that often, in the last three months there's only been one I've seen in the DC area.

Thanks @rocks in head. Okay, one in three months in DC makes me feel like I'm not missing them when they come up. There must not be a lot of them around, compared to Specialized, Trek, Giant, etc. Either that, or people keep them. I think that's why there are so few Cross Checks for sale, for example.

I don't know why I find these Volpe bikes so attractive!! I mean, look at them... nothing but some skinny tubes joined together. And yet, there is something about the whole thing put together that makes the sum more than the parts.

Have size 60/61 1997 Volpe.
I just converted the RSX shifters to bar-end. Looks pretty cool but couldn't upload some pictures until my nextb 10 post.

Now that this thread is revived, I noticed @Amitoj's post of June 20, 2017. I gave my Volpe to a young friend last year. He was working as a bike courier, so the bike probably served him well.
I see a newer Volpe locked up on the street in my neighborhood from time to time. Clearly it is used to carry a lot of stuff. Finally I saw the owner riding it yesterday. He has front and rear panniers, and he looks homeless or at least poor. Well, at least he has a sturdy bike to serve him. I've seen people who "live" on their bikes, but it's less common in NYC than some other cities.

I have a Volpe. It's maroon, Reynolds 520 tubing, tig welded. It's a nine speed and has a 2-bolt quill stem. I think it's a 2001 model. Not too vintage, but getting there.
I'll have to get some pictures.

I did not know the Volpe was in production for so long. I have seen them marketed as Touring, Cyclocross, and now Allroad. While not vintage in age, this is my 2016 model in 2017. It now has a red Brooks Cambium saddle and Compass tires. I really like the ride.

Here is the Volpe that started it all way back ‘86. She is still mostly stock. I’ll look for a more current pic later.
This is how my 'Sizzling Peach' Volpe looks today. I think the only stock items are the brakes and seatpost and barcons. The '86 Volpe did not come with a triple the but was rather forward thinking with a early compact crank with 49/36 rings and drilled for a triple. I upgraded to a CampI faux triple running a more standard, at least for me, 52/42 and I think 38, so basic road gears and bail out. CampI derailleurs as well. The wheels were built for my Hetchins and are shipmano bronze color STX RC Parallax style with Sun CR-18 rims and of course Pasela tires. I think it make a rather classy Randonneur or light tourer.
Sadly the fabulous Sizzling Peach color has been bleached to a Tired Flamingo from years in the hot Texas sun but the color under the FD clamp was awesome.

I was about to suggest a San Jose frameset, until I looked it up and realized that it has track-style rear dropouts, so it wouldn't really work as a geared bike, unless you used an IGH.
Here's my late 2011 Volpe (drivetrain is all 2011 specs, but the seatpost and stem match the 2012 specs). I bought it NOS last summer, and put over 5000 miles on it within the first 12 months of owning it, through all kinds of weather. I've recently made a few tweaks to the fit, and just built up a new wheelset, but this bike has been great!
Here's my late 2011 Volpe (drivetrain is all 2011 specs, but the seatpost and stem match the 2012 specs). @agmetal, that's very nice. It's also equipped very similarly to the one I had (and gave away). How much does yours weigh? Mine was a beastly 34 lbs.

- What size tires are you running right now? Any idea the max width with fenders for a 2011-2012 model? I've had Schwalbe Marathon 32s for over 5k miles, and I'm finally considering upgrading to a more supple casing and wider width for the summer. Would require reinstalling my fenders, so obviously a big ol' project. I want to go into it with a proven size
- Were you ever able to narrow down on the year for your model? I cannot tell for the life of me if this is a 2011 or 2012. Tiagra, Terrainasaurus WTB, same colorway. Are they the same?
- I would post my whip if I could, but gotta make that 10+ post mark first. However, I can say it's my favorite bike in the fleet for sure!

Referring to Joe Peeden's Volpe: I had this exact bike in this paint scheme and Miami Vice stickers. Rode well. I now have a 2007 Volpe in Gang Green which is my work horse. The only complaint is that the eighties Volpes had longer chain stays which I though rode better.

My ~1996 Volpe had 37mm tires and fenders. The later models may have had less clearance, but that was one of the really nice thing about the bike for me.

Mine is probably from 1993 and is still a great ride. Right now it has 32mm Panaracer Urban Max tires. I have run it with 28mm to 37mm although I did try Compass Barlow Pass tires. They ballooned enough that the rear tire was too close for comfort to the seat tube.
