Pacenti 'Brevet' 650b rim - so far so good

If anyone has been looking for a 650b rim designed to work with rim brakes I'm sure you have found only a few choices. I bought the 32 hole Pacenti 'Brevet' 650b rims and built-up a front and rear wheel with Sapim 'Race' double-butted spokes, Shimano hubs, and standard brass nipples.

After about 225 miles on these wheels I have found them to stay true, have a good, smooth braking surface, and a reasonable weight for a substantial rim. I also like the fact that they have eyelets as I was a bit concerned about over-tensioning the spokes and possibly damaging the rims at the holes - I had never built wheels before these. Even though I did tension the drive side rear spokes pretty high the tension dropped back a bit once I got the tire inflated.

If you're looking for a 650b rim, these have worked well for me so far. Pacenti also sells 650b pre-built wheels using these rims.

Thanks for the tip; they're fine-looking rims.

I was sorely disappointed when Velocity discontinued the Synergy in 650b, and for my latest build opted for the SunXCD Randonneur rim (as much for the non-shiny finish as for the triple walls). I haven't had the time to build them up yet, but I'll post a review at some point after I get a few miles on them.

I’ve put about 1200 miles on my Pacenti Brevet 650B rims, built up 32H 3X with DT butted spokes - the skinnier Revolutions (2.0/1.5/2.0) everywhere but rear DS. They’ve stayed true throughout with zero touch ups.

I waited almost 6 months for the 700C version to become available, but gave up when the latest delivery became “late June”.

If anyone is in need of a real nice set of 650b wheels, let me know and I will offer them on the For Sale forum. Have a look at the pictures and what other think in this thread in the Appraisal Forum.

As pointed out in the appraisal thread, those are 650C/571mm rims, not 650B/584mm rims.

Nice, I love hearing the good reports on these things.

Had you put in an order yet? I wonder if Kirk had to reject a batch or two. I've been eyeing these and the Forzas for the next time I need to build up a 700C wheelset. Which might be a while, given that my 26" and 650B bikes are getting all my love these days.

My mistake and sorry for it. My experience with these wheels is close to nil, however; I cannot help but wonder if they would do anything to improve ride quality, on this Barracuda that I found at the dump, last summer.

I believe 26" mtb wheels and 650c racing wheels are close enough in size that in some cases they might be interchangeable (perhaps with different brakes). But the range of tires available for 26" rims is much greater. I've never seen 650c tires wider than 28mm, or was it 25mm.

No, I hadn’t ordered the 700C Brevets yet. My LBS, Free Range Cycles in Fremont, WA, who is my source for Compass products, had been calling Pacenti periodically on my behalf. I ended up going with very nice, but slightly heavier H+Son tb14 rims, which I also have on the Miyata. But I ordered a 28H version direct from them in China for the front wheel, to go with the NOS 600 tricolor hub I found a few weeks ago

Sounds like a good shop! And Tricolor will look really sharp with those rims (I assume you got the polished silver version.)

My wife uses the Pacenti rims on her MAP.

She uses a SP dyno on the front and a Record rear hub. DT spokes are used and it makes for a robust, yet reasonably lightweight wheelset.

She seems to like the Compass Babyshoe Pass tires quite a bit and we think we'll build another dedicated wheelset like these for gravel.

I can't envision her switching tires, but I could see her popping in a different wheelset if the ride warrants it.

In addition, her friend is running the same rims on her Open U.P. and uses the Pumpkin Ridge tires.

Makes for a great all road set up.

Tubeless or not?

For those of you running these rims (or your partners), are any of you running them with inner tubes? It seems there are more than a few reviewers having difficulties getting tires on Pacenti’s other tubeless ready rims. Is this different for the Brevets (vs SL23, for example)?

I run tubes with SL23s. Tires are Pari-Motos. They're snug, but I don't have any trouble installing or removing them without tools. I haven't laced up my Brevets yet, but I have popped a Pari-Moto on and off of one without difficulty there either.

Success with tubeless-ready rims mostly comes down to two things: 1) use thin tubeless tape even if you plan to use tubes (NO VELOX!), and 2) keep as much of the tire bead in the center channel of the rim while installing or dismounting to give yourself more slack.

In some ways, tubeless-ready rims are *nicer* for tire installation/removal than some of the classic road rims that were just plain tight and didn't have a channel down the center.

I had a set of 650B wheels built with Pacenti Brevets a little while ago. I mounted a set of Compass 650Bx38 Loup Loup Pass ELs with no difficulty. NB: using Stans rim tape.

I realize this thread is almost a year old- but I have a set of 700C wheels built up for me with Pacenti Brevet rims- I can't wait to be riding them...

Thanks ThermionicScott and palincss,
Brevets are all laced up and mounting SimWorks Homage 650b x 43 tires and tubes provided no difficulty. FWIW, I used Pacenti's tubeless rim tape.

Good to hear people are liking these. I have a set of 28 hole Brevets to build up. My rear PL23 has started cracking around the eyelets.

@nazcalines, you might want to take Pacenti up on their offer of reparations. https://pacenticycledesign.com/pages/rim-amnesty

Anyone know if Pacenti "sells to the trade" ? The folks I'm having build a wheels set with Brevets wasn't sure if they could get them any easier than me.
