Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Could It Really Be This Simple (Wrist Pain)

I had been having some pain at the base of my wrist on the ulnar side (side opposite the thumb). All would be fine at the start of a ride and after an hour or so it would be quite sore where pushing on the paddle shifter (2014 Campy Chorus Ergos - mechanical) was pretty painful. Then the same story the next day where it was fine for a while then....

I set up a doctor's appointment but that will take a couple weeks to get in (at least to see the orthopod of my choice). On a whim I bought a new pair of half gloves with some pretty good heel padding. After 3 days of riding I would judge this problem to be reduced by about 80% to the point that it is only a mild irritant - the kind that I would just ignore (lots of stuff hurts like that after 69 years) if it wasn't for the earlier experience.

I guess the answer is 'yes, it really is that simple'. But is it really that simple? Have others found such a simple change to make such a huge difference? I was being more careful with my hand position but I honestly don't think that was the answer here.

Thanks.

dave

Friend of mine got injured running in shorts that wore out and no longer have enough padding. It's not exactly the same because running is high impact, but it's close enough that I think it corroborates your hunch that the gloves were a big part of it.

I am assuming that your friend got injured running in SHOES with inadequate padding. I am a former runner and I can certainly believe that one (as I did it to myself once).

He has very aggressive auto-correct.

@DaveLeeNC Thanks for posting. My wife is having terrible wrist pain at the moment, so I will give this a try.

I had some wrist pain all of a sudden last winter. I mentioned it to my wife, and she asked "what have you changed on your bike?" . It turned out I had turned my brake hoods in a bit more to see what I thought.

She suggested I turn the hoods back out to where they were before I rode again. I did, and that was when my wrist started to heal up.

I can't imagine riding without gloves or my wrists start to hurt after 15 mins of riding. I think it's really that easy sometimes.
