Paramount, Paul Racer's, Shelac & Twine or "How I spent my Christmas Vacation"

In a quest to "keep up" with cudak888's repeated postings of his chrome Paramount below are some pics of my 72' P-15 with newly acquired Paul Racer's, shelac & twined bar tape, new 700c Panaracer Pasela TG's (32mm) and the rear wheel I had built around a Specialized hub and 7 speed Suntour freewheel. I had the bike out today for about 25 miles and it handles and shifts like a dream.

It was cold today about 34 degrees with a 15 mph headwind. I was glad I had the saddle bag to carry the extra clothing I needed! Hope you all had good holidays as well!

Very nicely done. Why did you use the new brakes? Just wondering.

also how come you used such a big straddle cable for the front brake? Setting up centerpuls is such a black art

Cool rando machine. Like I'm high on burning Rivendell Reader pages rolled up and filled with hemp twine shavings, and listening to "Ventura Highway" on my 8 track...but in a good way. And alum bottles would look the S**t on that bike, but only if you polished 'em.

How do the Paul centerpulls work? I have a set of his cantis on my winterbike and love them.

Beauty! I love the rebuild - especially the Paul centerpull calipers.

To tell you the truth, I get rather tired of seeing the Weinmann/Campagnolo mix on the Paramounts - any interesting alternate builds will always catch my eye. Been dying to build one up with CLB-2 centerpulls and a Zeus drivetrain myself...

Thanks all.

holiday76 also, the only thing that thing is missing is aluminum water bottles.

I had a set of those before and one got crushed under a Ford Explorer when it bounced out of the cage after I hit a bump! They also rattled a bit on bumpy roads and I found it a bit harder to drink from them since you can't squeeze them.

onetwentyeight also how come you used such a big straddle cable for the front brake? Setting up centerpuls is such a black art

It is a black art for me as well! In response to the questions, I wanted to make sure I could clear the light and get the 4th hand tool in there. I may have over done it a bit. The brakes are a noticeable improvement from the Weinmanns in stopping power. Also the Racer was the only long reach, nutted brake that I could find. Most everything else was recessed mount and I did not want to drill the forks. The brakes allow me to run 700c wheels and wide tires. I am running 32mm now and the bike can easily take 35mm w/ fenders or maybe even larger. Be forewarned if you ever get a set of these brakes that they are NOT truly 73mm max reach, as advertised. They are more like 68mm and the rear needed a bit of filing to have the pads hit the rim correctly.

"Shelac & Twine"

What exactly is this referring to? I'm not familiar with wrapping the bars this way..

Bar tape is shellacked for durability/waterproofness/tackiness; wound on from the ends of the bars, and finished with twine against the bar lugs (and, in this case, the interrupter levers) by the stem: Old Style.

Very nice job, fender1 -- on everything. Aren't you going to get some of those fancy roller-yolks for the straddle cables? Or, I have cudak888's cast-off Weinmann yokes with the bolts that were rechromed too nicely for his sensibilities; you could have those for the asking..

Charles,

Thanks for the compliments and I do have a set of the fancy VO roller yolks. The boring, old yolks I am using are wider and help the straddle cable clear the light by being a bit wider. BTW I am hoping to get over to Bilenky to pick up the Trek frame tomorrow. If I can, I send you a picture.

What Charles said and here is a link to the twine portion. As for the shelac, 4 coats of Bullseye amber. It helps to seal the bar wrap from moisture & dirt. When the wrap does get dirty or worn, just add a few more coats of shelac and they look almost as good as new.

And for hemp twine sources:
https://www.globalhemp.com where I bought both 20# (thin) and 48# test (thicker) waxed natural, and ended up using the thin stuff for this

There's also this place
https://www.hempsupply.com/
that has both twine and cord. Minimum size for cord seems to be 1 mm. EDIT -- the 48# stuff I bought appears to be 1.2 or 1.5 mm thick, while the 20# appears to be <1 mm thick, but one site claims that the 20# is 1 mm; YMMV.

The instructions (video) at epicureancyclist are the same process I used, except that I did the loop/pull thing on the underside of the bar. I found this originally at Dave Moulton's blog:
https://davesbikeblog.squarespace.com...andlebars.html

Beautiful job on a beautiful bike. I use stainless water bottles available from Kleen Kanteen; they're kind of hard to squeeze but you can order them with either a screw-off top or pop-up top and they are just chubby enough to fit snugly into any cage on all of my bikes.

I'm honored. If you like, I should be able to get you a full-screen version for most resolutions (even up and past 1240x1024).

I've been using one of Ray Dobbins' photos myself:
