Newbie from NY
My ride
Possibly 1993 or 1997 GT Vantara. Co-Worker had a spare bike in the garage and gave it to me free of charge. So this is my new commuter for about three weeks now. Haven't done any recreational riding yet. I haven't owned a bike for more than 20 years. Having a good time although navigating NYC traffic is pretty challenging. Glad to be here.

Welcome to Bike Forums. The folks in the Commuting forum can give you lots of help with route planning, what to carry on the bike, etc. Have fun.

Welcome to the forums (I'm a newb, here, too). More importantly, welcome back to riding!
As a fellow NYer, I can say, yeah, it takes some getting used to, but it's a lot better than when I was growing up. If you plan your route, you can get around pretty fast and avoid most of the more ridiculous spots in terms of cars and pedestrians. That said, you'll even get used to weaving through all that stuff fairly quickly. Shoot, at least we don't have to navigate this traffic in one of those gas-powered vehicles, lol... and you'll find that, a lot of the time, you're faster than you would've been by car or train, even riding safely.
