Schwinn S30 shock replaced with solid aluminum rod
Anyone seen this before? I picked the complete bike up for 30 bucks. In all my years of working at the shop,on friends bikes or my own(about 3 decades) I've never seen this. I can't understand why someone would do this. It looks like a quality piece so I assume it's aftermarket and not DIY. Any thoughts?

Probably could not get a replacement shock for the original or did not want to spend the money and had some skillz. Not unheard for an old Proflex with those urethane bumpers. In the motorcycle world this is called a strut.
I see they've made up for the lack of suspension by running really low tire pressures.

It's a big-box bike. Should work fine until it breaks. That narrow, small-gauge single pivot swing arm has to handle a lot of sideways torque. The absence of a spring might just stress it more. I presume you're only cruising the neighborhood on this thing.

The bearings are probably frozen in place anyway, and the suspension was probably garbage even new. All things considered it's probably better now.

Not a big box bike but not high end either. It was worth it just for the couple parts I wanted from it for another build though.
