Sure the price for this junk heap is insane, but I'm mainly posting so I can ask what that V-shaped contraption is strapped to the seat tube and down tube is. World's bendiest frame pump?

Guy trying to pass off a 1982 Trek 614 as 1983 Trek 720

I contacted the seller and explained to him that this IS NOT a 1983 Trek 720, but a 1982 Trek 614, and he may want to change his ad to reflect this. He originally had it for an opening bid of $295.
His response?
"If you take the time to read the NM it is a 1983 look at the other 720 on the internet thiers only one other color and Burgundy is it the comes from Google and that ."
Okay, whatever dude. AND, now the starting bid is $495, with a $795 buy-it-now price! I even sent him links to the correct info!

Did you congratulate him on getting such a clear photo of the bike, given he was apparently moving at aprx. 1/2 the speed of sound as he passed by it?
Still a pretty bike, worth maybe half the BIN on a good day, provided it hasn't been rode hard and put up wet (for which, of course, the photos provide NO clue), and provided it's been fully tuned with fresh lube (which, given his use of nomenclature in the ad, isn't likely).

So, someone had the wonderful idea of taking a piece of scrap metal and making a custom tube to mount those water bottle cages (or other accessories).

I've seen crazy stuff on CL , but I have received crazy "legitimate" offers for trade when I sell bikes. Everything from all the fresh duck eggs I can handle to cannabis , and in between. I had one hipster recently offer to trade me a digital recorder, his skate board (which could shred according to him) and some lara bars for a nice Panasonic I recently sold. Oh and a woman in Idaho wanted to trade me some marketing services for my 81 Allez about a month ago , I did counter that if her marketing skills were truly that great she would have no problem paying with the money she earns for the bike.

I know a guy who did the Southern Tier (~3200 miles) in 28 days. No support vehicle, and he camped out almost every night. 114 miles/day average pedalling 65 lbs. But he didn't make a movie about it.

3500 miles in 40 days is impressive. But he did have a support vehicle, no gear to haul. 87.5 miles/day average pedalling maybe 20 lbs?

Back to my point, CliffordK's joke was 'you mean fixies aren't for mountains'? Until Tullio invented the derailleur, all bikes were single speed, and they rode over mountains. And not over beautiful asphalt back then either, probably more like gravel grinding.

I watched it twice and it was fascinating, yes others pointed out he had support but only a masochist would not have had support riding 1920’s bicycles on that tour route. I am a firm believer that had a modern 3x9 drive train been available in the 1920s they would have used it . As a smart man once said you goto war with what you have not what you wish you had.
Riders who raced the tour in those early days raced with what they had ...
Having said that I’m also a firm believe that those who went before us. Specifically those who lived through period of time spanning WWI to the end of WWII were better people . It takes hard men to endure and thrive in hard times .

Uh, if he is 6'4", then a 57cm bike is more than a little too small for him.
Take the most basic road bike in a brand's '80s lineup, pay a bundle to have someone gussy it up for you, THEN decide it's the wrong size for you and sell it.
