I am upgrading my 2014 Specialized Camber Comp 29. (This is my first post, so cannot attach any images)
I'd like to install a 1x drivetrain with a 10 spd 10-51 Shimano cassette. Will I need to change the rear wheel to accommodate the wider cassette?

Pretty sure the 10-51 is a 12 speed, not 10.

I think in 10 you can get 11-46 from Sunrace. I run their 11-42 and I like it.

To run anything with a 10, you'll need a different freehub body, possibly whole hub depending on whether your model has a microspline or XD as an add on.

I think Sunrace also is doing an 11-50 for people who want to try 1x12 without messing with their hubs.

To clarify any cassette with a 10 tooth at the beginning of the cassette means a new freehub body. Anything that starts with an 11 will work fine with what you have.
11-42/50/whatever = fine
10-42/50/whatever = not fine

Thanks for the responses.
The guy at the REI bike shop said that I might need a new wheel, which is clearly not accurate.
I am a complete noob, so pardon my next questions:
1. Is a 10 or 11 spd cassette wider than 9 spd? If sp, are the seat/chainstays flexible enough to accommodate a wider cassette?
2. From my brief reading on the web, a 10T cassette will not work because the diameter of the hub needs to be smaller? Is that correct?
3. The stack height (or width) of a 11spd cassette will be greater than my current 9spd cassette, so the freehub body will not be able to accommodate the 11spd cassette, right?

11 speed will work fine as will a 12 speed again as long as it starts with an 11 tooth cog. There is no flexing of anything to make it fit. 11 and 12 speed are both wider than 10, 9 ,8,,, speed but they cheat it by having the biggest cog hang over the freehub body flange so they still fit the same freehub body. If you get into road bike cassettes then you need to start worrying.

A 10 tooth cog won't fit because it won't fit. They require a special freehub body either Sram's XD driver or Shimano's Micro Spline.

I currently have a 2x9 drivetrain:
My current cassette is 9 speed (SRAM PG 920, 9-Speed, 11-34 Tooth)
My BB is SRAM GXP XR, 73mm
The crankset is Custom SRAM S-1250, GXP Spindle with 36/22T chainring

I am looking at the following custom groupset to upgrade to 1x drivetrain:
Cassette: SunRace CSMX80 11-50T 11-Speed
Crankset: SRAM NX 1x GXP 170mm/32T
Rear trigger shifter: SRAM X1 11-Speed Trigger Shifter
Rear Derailleur: SRAM NX 1X11 X-Horizon Rear Derailleur for 11 Speed - Long Cage, Black
KMC X11 , Silver/Black 118 Link 11 Speed Chain

Hi!

Yup, this will work, as long as the cassette fits the freehub body. Also, for some strange reason, SRAM states the maximum tooth count for the derailleur as 42, but still refers to the “cassette’s largest cog” as 50/52 in the user’s manual, but I’d say you’ll be fine with that setup.

Hello, thanks for confirming. Good catch with the derailleur being 42T. I could not find where it says in the user manual that the largest cog can be 50/52T. Can you point me to it please? Otherwise I am thinking of going with Deore M5100. Thanks!

I think the instruction manual is a general 1X install so references the larger cassette.

In the compatibility chart, it has the NX 11psd maxing at 42T
