Who else would create a "survey" where virtually every response is destined to be TLDR?

^ these last few posts reflect my initial reaction to this thread. Surveys must be designed for a purpose, to elicit information that may be they correlated to, or shown causation for, some other effect. This list of Q&A's was not designed with any purpose in mind other than discussion and comparison to a very narrow, self-selected sample of the riding population. Anyway. Rant over. That's why I didn't respond...

23 year-olds are best neither seen nor heard, in my experience.

You had me until the declaration of generational war. Actually, something else was wrong, too. This is just a list of questions, you give it way too much credit when you ascribe a design for any purpose to it at all.

I don't mean it to be generational at all. I meant specific to 23 year-olds. By 28 or 29, they may begin to acquire some wisdom and perspective.

I began my career in the aerospace industry as a highly trained engineer. I was, at that time, very bright, inquisitive, abounding in energy, resourceful, dedicated and focused. Thankfully, I had just enough sense to keep my mouth shut, because surrounding me were older and wiser teachers who were every bit as capable as I, but having substantially better perspective. Working hard for five years, I learned when and how to speak, how to contribute positively, but more importantly, how to follow directions and be held accountable for results.

My point being that I was a 23 year-old once, too.

I was once 23 years old, too...But I don't then conclude that I understand, much less have a right to judge, all 23 year-olds.

But after a career spent working with young people, I have concluded that they are much like all other ages in this respect: some are more intelligent and wise than others.

The OP has not been given nearly enough credit for this. All he did was to post questions and his answers. He never asked anyone to complete the survey. He never mentioned anything to give it any context. We don't even know if he is the author of the survey. Yet he has managed to get two pages of responses, simply by posting some questions and responses.

This thread is on auto-troll, which is a quite remarkable accomplishment.

Thanks to the COVID vaccine, I was able to see my 23 year old son in person last weekend for the first time since September. I was rather happy to see and hear him. You're still declaring a generational war, you're just drawing the line at a younger age. I don't think the idea we have nothing to learn from the perspective of 23 year olds is a bit silly, at best.

1. How old are you? 52
2. Fitness level on a scale of 1-10: Compared to who? I'm an 8 compared to my 10 of 15 years ago. I'm a 2 compared to World Tour pros. I'm a 10 compared to the 3 I was two years ago.
3. Cycling skill, 1-10: Compared to who? There some things on a bike I'm quite good at. Other things, not so much. "Cycling" covers a pretty wide range of disciplines.
4. Typical riding conditions? Urban, suburban, and mountain roads
5. What sort of riding your bike is best suited to? What's the geometry designed for? Going fast on the road.
6. What would you change about your bike? Nothing. However, a new bike with electronic shifting and disc brakes would be nice.
7. Do you bike for fitness rides? Commuting? Joy rides? Do you drive or rely on your bike for everything? I get joy out of the suffering it takes to burn calories off my fat @$$.
8. Do you focus on any sort of specific excersises in accessory to cycling? How does it improve your performance? Nope.
9. How often do you partake in long distance rides? How far is "long distance"? My typical rides tend to be in the 20-60mile range.
10. Do you perform your own maintenance? Yes.
11. How does cycling impact your nutrition? It means I can get away with eating and drinking more of the things I enjoy without them killing me quite as quickly.
12. Is cycling more cardiovascular or muscular hypertrophy based, in your opinion? Cardio, for sure.
13. Do you have more than one bike? Yes.
14. How does cycling help you cope with stress, depression, etc? Physical exertion is excellent stress relief.
15. Do you ride in the rain, cold weather? So Cal cold - sometimes. MN/WI/MI cold - hell no.
16. How cycling friendly is the area where you live? Accessibility to paved trails? Gravel? Singletrack? Whatever your poison, So Cal has it.

1. How old are you?
Late 50's
2. Fitness level on a scale of 1-10
According to the health survey that my employer requires, I'm healthier than the average person my age, but that's a low bar, and Americans aren't very healthy overall. I'll give myself a 5.
3. Cycling skill, 1-10
Who am I kidding? This would be like an amateur violinist comparing themselves to Paganini. I've not even attempted some kinds of cycling, such as technical MBT'ing, or mass start racing. I get from A to B in one piece, am courteous, and get reliable use out of my bikes. I'll give myself a 5.
4. Typical riding conditions?
Everywhere but technical MTB trails
5. What sort of riding your bike is best suited to? What's the geometry designed for?
See item 4. Geometries are designed for comfort.
6. What would you change about your bike?
Less rust, more paint. Space for wider tires.
7. Do you bike for fitness rides? Commuting? Joy rides? Do you drive or rely on your bike for everything?
Everything, but I'm not car free.
8. Do you focus on any sort of specific excersises in accessory to cycling? How does it improve your performance?
I'm doing some upper body work with little dumbbells. I doubt that it affects my cycling. The hope is to maintain upper body strength, which I don't have a lot of to begin with.
9. How often do you partake in long distance rides?
Every couple of weekends during nice weather.
10. Do you perform your own maintenance?
Yes, exclusively.
11. How does cycling impact your nutrition?
Not.
12. Is cycling more cardiovascular or muscular hypertrophy based, in your opinion?
Nobody would mistake me for someone with muscular hypertrophy.
13. Do you have more than one bike?
Yup.
14. How does cycling help you cope with stress, depression, etc?
Gets me out of the house, lets me think in peace.
15. Do you ride in the rain, cold weather?
Yup. Year round.
16. How cycling friendly is the area where you live? Accessibility to paved trails? Gravel? Singletrack?
Quite bike friendly. Wisconsin had good paved roads in the past, but today, "pavement is the new gravel." There aren't very many gravel roads. Singletrack is mostly trails built to be challenging for MTB'ers, not real mountains.

1. How old are you?
40
2. Fitness level on a scale of 1-10
6
3. Cycling skill, 1-10
Who knows? I can go reasonably fast and don't fall off, so that's good enough for me.
4. Typical riding conditions?
Flat paved roads. Usually daytime, but sometimes go out at night as well. Lots of traffic, both two wheeled and four wheeled.

5. What sort of riding your bike is best suited to? What's the geometry designed for?

Bike was originally a hybrid (sort of like a flat bar road bike) but I've since converted it to a drop bar. Definitely most at home on the road.

6. What would you change about your bike?
Wouldn't mind putting disc brakes on it, but I have no disc brake mount on my fork, which I am not planning to replace as it's got a crown suspension ('head shock') that I don't want to give up.

7. Do you bike for fitness rides? Commuting? Joy rides? Do you drive or rely on your bike for everything?

Fitness / joy rides. I mostly work from home except when I'm travelling on business so I don't have to commute, and I use the Metro to take me places if I want to go somewhere else in the city.

8. Do you focus on any sort of specific excersises in accessory to cycling? How does it improve your performance?

Just walking.

9. How often do you partake in long distance rides?
Fairly frequently. Usually try to do at least one >80km ride per month, at least in the warmer months, and a minimum 50-60km ride most weekends.

10. Do you perform your own maintenance?
Yep. Do all the work on my bike myself.

11. How does cycling impact your nutrition?
The more I ride, the more beer I can drink. So that's good.

12. Is cycling more cardiovascular or muscular hypertrophy based, in your opinion?

13. Do you have more than one bike?
No. I live in a small apartment and have to store my bike out in the elevator lobby. I don't have space for a second bike.

14. How does cycling help you cope with stress, depression, etc?
It's nice to get out on the bike at lunch time to take my mind off of work for an hour.

15. Do you ride in the rain, cold weather?
Occasionally to both, but not super cold (only gets down to about 0C here) and definitely not more than drizzle / very light rain if I can at all help it.

16. How cycling friendly is the area where you live? Accessibility to paved trails? Gravel? Singletrack?

Most roads have bike lanes, often grade separated. Not a lot of dedicated cycle paths. But lots of traffic in most cases. Gravel and singletrack - not likely. I'm in the middle of a metropolitan area with >25 million people, after all.

1. How old are you?
- 54
2. Fitness level on a scale of 1-10
- 8
3. Cycling skill, 1-10
- 8
4. Typical riding conditions?
Almost exclusively road. I do have a fat bike, but mostly for snowy days.

5. What sort of riding your bike is best suited to? What's the geometry designed for?
Smooth roads, not too steep,

6. What would you change about your bike?

I need a granny gear. I would like to change my largest gear from 28 to 36.

7. Do you bike for fitness rides? Commuting? Joy rides? Do you drive or rely on your bike for everything?

All three. I use my car for shopping and for going with the family.

8. Do you focus on any sort of specific excersises in accessory to cycling? How does it improve your performance?

I try to focus on core strength, as well as regular stretching.

9. How often do you partake in long distance rides?

I try to do at least one imperial century per year and 2 or 3 metric centuries.

10. Do you perform your own maintenance?

As much as I can. Hydraulic brakes scare me, so I go to the LBS for that.

11. How does cycling impact your nutrition?

I am trying to lose weight and maintain power, so it is always hard finding the right balance. Intermittent fasting with about an hour of fasting riding seems to work the best.

12. Is cycling more cardiovascular or muscular hypertrophy based, in your opinion?

Hypertrophy - my legs get tired sometimes when my heartrate is pretty moderate. In fact, sometimes I have a hard time keeping my heart rate up.

13. Do you have more than one bike?
A commuter with saddle bags, my road bike, my fat bike, and an old hybrid that stays on the trainer.

14. How does cycling help you cope with stress, depression, etc?

I am always 1 bike ride away from a good mood!

15. Do you ride in the rain, cold weather?

Yes. The only thing that will keep me home is winds over 25 mph.

16. How cycling friendly is the area where you live? Accessibility to paved trails? Gravel? Singletrack?

No trails, not much bike infrastructure, but I have had very few bad interactions with cars.
