And speaking of being south of the Mason Dixon, as some of you will see on Strava, I'm back in VA.
The previously undisclosed reason for our extended visit over Christmas was my father in law's pancreatic cancer diagnosis. The reason for the return is that he had a turn for the worse shortly after we left, landed back in the hospital and they updated his outlook, shortening it to days-to-weeks.
Upon receiving the news, the wife and kids flew ahead by plane, just in case it went quickly (the boy was adamant about being here for Grandpa) and then I packed up the necessities (and cat) for an extended stay and drove solo over the course of two days.
FIL is in rough shape, wife is taking leave to assist over sleepless nights, while I'm assisting with the day-to-day, provisioning and cooking, etc.
Fun stuff.

I rode Stage 5 of the 2019 Tour de Romandie on FulGaz and some no-name guy by the name of Primož Roglič rode it twice as fast as me. He must have had an e-bike.

Well, I got my 40+ mile real road miles ride in to make sure I can do at least 35 mixed gravel miles next weekend. I tried my best to do an endurance pace, but the wind was seriously brutal which made me bump the effort just so I wasn't doing 5 mph everywhere. I intended to do a loop twice, but instead did a turnaround point because the longest stretch on the first loop was into a headwind and it just didn't seem fair to do it twice.
On another note, my FTP might actually not be as bad as I thought. I mentioned that after getting my power meter on the bike I figured out I was setting up my Wahoo Kickr Snap all wrong. The ramp test I did before then said 184. My best 20 minute on this ride was 206, so that would put me at 195 or so. And that wasn't an all out 20 minutes, so I'm curious to see how the ramp test does now that I have my trainer set up properly. I planned on doing it again at the end of the month.

Well thank goodness - this damn washing machine was really starting to bug me.
Some basic troubleshooting led me to believe that the drain pump was the problem, but I didn't have a way of confirming that. I pulled the pump out and went to a Harbor Freight to pick up a multimeter. I checked for continuity, certain that it was an open loop.... and it wasn't. It was showing resistance.
Went back, connected the electrical leads without reinstalling (so that I could see the impeller), fired up the washer and... ******g pump starts spinning. Damn. It's good, so I've gotta look elsewhere.
Check all of the hoses for a clog - nothing. Did I miss some debris when I was taking it apart? Maybe. Put it all back together. Fill it. Drain it. Nope, still not draining.
Since I can't think of anything better to do, I decide to remove the pump again, while leaving the electrical leads attached... so that I can start a cycle and stick something in the spinning impeller.
Turns out that the slightest touch stops the impeller dead in its tracks - it's a bad pump after all! It's a bad pump after all! It's a bad pump after all - it's a bad, bad pump.

Yesterday afternoon I laced my first wheel in close to ten years. A rear one. I always start with the rear. At the end of the first tensioning there were two long spokes in each fourpack--a driveside and a non-driveside next to each other. Today I re-laced it and almost all of them are long. Went back to the spoke calculator and it wants 287.9 ds, and 289.6 nds. I went with 290 all around, it being a double wall rim, I figured I could fudge those 2mm. And it just so happened I had a significant supply of 290. I will now have to search the bin to see if there are enough of the correct length. Stainless double butted spokes have become something on the order of hen's teeth, in these parts, since my last foray.
I took the opportunity to fabricate a proper nipple driver while I was about it. It seemed like such a difficult task in the past, but it whipped right out today.
I may be reduced to using galvanized, or carbon steel spokes. What I can't see myself doing, willingly anyway, is going with steel nipples. I think I'd sooner ride a soulless bike.
