Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I hope you're right. I gave up on my Michelin PR3s because of multiple slashes (much more than on my PR2s.)

I've only got ~200 miles on my 4000s - so far, so good.

Ditto. Changed to 4000S, no more troubles. They ride better, too.

I was happy to pay 39.95 for mine. Best racing clinchers I've used.

In defense of Michelin, I have heard good things about the PR3's (i.e. better than the PR2's, although I have not ridden them)....but I have been VERY pleased with the GP 4000s, and as above the current price from PBK can't be beat, about HALF the price charged by most online retailers in the usa.

I may snatch up three even though I do not need them. I'm rolling on Vredestein Fortezza TriComps now, much smoother rolling than the GP4k's but also harsher on the bumps.

Edit: just ordered three...

Yes, my "too many slashes" comment was based on a rather small data set of one, but I was amazed how many pretty deep slashes I got after a very short time. Especially when I compared this to my trouble-free experience with PR2s.

Mine are seriously difficult to get on the rim. Levers are more than necessary.

I have found that levers are necessary the FIRST time you mount the tires....subsequent mounts can be done just with your fingers, in my experience.

I just put on new GP4000s from PBK last week. I actually snapped a leveler trying to mount the tire - they are that stiff. I hope they loosen up a little for roadside flat fixing reasons, but expect they will.

Recently I've ridden PR2's, Rubino Pro & Pro Slick, Fortezza Tri Comps, Ultra Sports and the GP 4000 S is by far the best wearing / handling tire. I'm probably jinxing myself but I've had only 1 flat on these on 2 sets in over 6000 km. (Front tire and the nail went right through to the rim tape)

I orderd 3 from PBK this morning to last me through the 2009 season.

Mounting them on my Ksyrium Sl's were easy compare to mountng them on my CF clinchers. I always varry levers just in case.

how do they handle in the wet? Living in Portland Oregon I am generally concerned about that.

Just ordered Four 4000S with 5% off.
I hope it's good as Michelin PR2.
Decided against PR3 based on posting regarding excessive/fast wear.

Depends on the rims. On My Fulcrum 1s they just slide into place easily.

I started using these last season because we got them through a team deal (and still paid more than the PBK price, by the way). I'm very, very, very happy with mine. I'm going to stick with them.

Wait, they're in stock today? WTF. What good is e-mail alerts if they don't actually e-mail you when they're in stock.

And the site is down right now so I can't go look.

I swapped out my stock bontrager tires for GP4000S's, and I won't ride on anything else anymore. The grip when cornering is unbelievable, couple of times I have thought mid corner 'I'm going down', and suddenly it feels like someone from above grabbing me by the jersey and saying 'Oh no you dont!!!'

I hope they loosen up a little for roadside flat fixing reasons
Don't worry, it gets a lot easier, they loosen up quite a bit

Back in the summer I read an article testing various road tires. If I remember correctly it was a study in Germany...BUT I'm not entirely sure. Conti's GP4000s were included in the study and it was given a good rating for wet weather riding. Sorry to be so vague.

I've had good luck with Bontrager Race Lite tires in the full on rain in Milwaukee. They're pretty cheap tires too! Hope this helps...maybe you can find that test.

What's going on...

The GP4000 with black chili is out of stock, and costs about $24 on PBK. But the GP4000S (which says it has black chili) is in stock but costs about $30.

Does anyone know what the difference is?

Funny... I just ordered a set today from PBK as a change to the the Vittorias I've been riding. Good to hear some positive feedback on them.

They are the same tire- but you pay a little more for the trick silver sidewall writing... go figure.

(also, the colored GP4000 tires do not have "black chili" flat resistance- whatever that's worth)

anyway I love my set
