Looking to get a cheap MTB.
I'm a bit confused now, when titles said something like 26" hardtail mtb or something, its pretty much talking about 26" wheels?
My uncle got a nice Schwinn hardtail mtb for $200 new, with these cool shifters... index and thumb shifters, bike was very smooth, I cant seem to find it on their website :/
that could be a option for me if I could find a used one.
but for now im looking in the $100 range, and doing some work.
1996 peugeot
Schwinn Mountain Bike
Hard rock specialized mountain bike
Roadmaster Granite Peak 26" Men's Mountain Bike, Black - Walmart.com
Schwinn High Sierra
I was fairly interested in the peugeot, but I contacted the seller, seems the tires are flat, no idea if they got a pump, and the crank looks a bit rusted, prob needs a new chain. will coke fix it?
and its a ISS 450 serial CK17446... looking up the serial I found nothing.
I'm not sure but is this a mens bike? and the frame might be a 17"? will that work with me? Just found out I've been riding what I think is a 15" frame, a mongoose xr-75 (half way at the crank bold to the top of seatpost clamp)
I am a 6'2" male 140lbs 34" inseam and a cheapass, and not much of a bicyclist, but want to be.
I will mainly be riding gravel paths fairly flat, sidwalk, road, grass.
Thanks,
Awaqa909

Of the bikes you listed, The last one is the only possibility that might work. A bottle of Coke will NOT fix a bike that is as rusted as that Peugeot. Look beyond the rust, that bike has been seriously neglected
Your uncle paid $200, you want to pay half as much. You may have to settle for a bike that isn't as good as his

The High Sierra is pretty cool. A little heavy for full rigid but a sweet ride
I'd probably go for this one.
Killer parts but looks like it needs a little work. Front derailer looks too high, unfortunate looking fork, might be OK tho.
Gary fisher
Or this one. Could use some better pedals. It's probably a little heavy for rigid, too but maybe not as bad as High Sierra.
vintage Tange steel frame COYOTE TWO. Mountainbike. 19"

I'm just south of you in San Antonio. I have a Fuji Thrill hardtail rigid fork from the 90's. I think it is from the 90's. Metallic orange. The frame is made with Tru Temper AVR. 21 Speed Shimano. Rims are Mavic X222 and are true. I just finished overhauling it. Rebuilt the hubs, new brakes and cables, new seat. It's all done and ready to go. The frame size is a larger 20.5 so it would be a good size for you. If you will meet me halfway in San Marcos it's yours for $125. It's too dark out to take a pic now, but I can post some tomorrow.

Nice spot on the coyote, I like it and the price.
but I still wonder about the peugeot, is it a girls bike? and what if its just the picture that makes the crank/chain look so bad?
for the price/condition I think i'll go for the coyote... but then I look at the high sierra and wonder if it would be better to have that frame size? its what this one frame calculator says I need is 23" for a road bike, which is pretty much what these bikes use for frames? otherwise it says 19.5" for a mountain bike frame.
what is the difference say a 20"frame with a taller seat or a 23" with a seat in the same spot as the other? is there different lengths (front to rear axle) in the sizes?

Jicafold has one is the best deals you're gonna find. I'd go for it.

Peugeot isn't a girl's bike. Crank might be OK, just surface rust. Or it might have totally worn rings, in need of chain, wasted bottom bracket and hubs, etc.
It's a lowend peugeot judging from the seatpost clamp. And those cranks are so slender. Almost look cottered, but nahhhh, couldn't be.
Jica's bike sounds pretty rad. Love AVR tubing!

I know you've overhauled the bicycle, I'm sure its very nice, but I just don't want to spend so much money and have a bicycle that my potentially sit and collect dust. maybe if I caught onto bicycling and you still had it later on (probably sometime 2015) I wouldn't mid getting it. Sorry if I sounded a bit ******.

The problem is if you buy a cheap bike you probably will not have an experience that will lead to enjoying biking. It is a real catch 22. Have some faith, save some money, and buy a decent ride. You will enjoy it and ride more.

Save up cash for a double-butted cromoly steel MTB on eBay. Vintage 90s models from various brands can be found that offer a light and sweet ride without breaking the bank.
Good luck.
Good luck.

but of a 19" vs 23" rigid frame like the schwinn and the coyote what kind of differences dimension wise will they have? If I put on a longer seat post will it be just like a 23"? I had enjoyment out if my 15" frame mtb till the freewheel showed heavy wear on some sprockets.

They'll be different but not much to do with the 19 and 23 measurements.. 19" bike will have lower bars. You might be able to raise the stem about an inch or swap in riser bars to fix that.
Top tube might be shorter on the 19, might not. 23" High Sierra has a 23.5" top tube. I have a 19" KHS with a 23.5" top tube, dunno what the Coyote two has. I had a Coyote Four and it had a long top tube.
Schwinn has slacker angles and a longer wheelbase, so smoother, limousine ride, slower to turn, less twitchy.

Oh and the Coyote might gave a long enough seatpost already. Just watch for min insertion marks when raising it.

I'd go all the way to Austin but that is an hour each way. I don't care about the time to help a guy out, but it is the cost of the gas. Austin is flooded with bikes but they tend to be more expensive there too than in San Antonio.
