92 trek 2300 WWYD?
i have what i THINK is 92 trek 2300 bike.
it was a thrift store project buy from about 10 years ago. when i originally bought it from goodwill the yellow was painted purple with the CF tubes clear coated raw CF. there were a LOT of scratches on it from being locked up with a cable. the 8 speed STI shifters were almost non op. the brakes were worn down until they were metal on metal and almost non op also.
i got it dirt cheap, stripped the purple paint off. epoxy and 2K primed it. the CF tubes i carefully sanded off the scratches in the clear coat and re clear coated them. the purple paint was repainted yellow with some auto paint i had on the shelf. i also had a stripe guy make me up some stripes for it also. after installing the stripes i clear coated over them. **** NOTE i am a certified auto body tech/ painter with over 30 years experience. so all of the paint work is pro quality and done properly. the odd looking CF tubes is dust from laying around.
when i painted it i lost the lower gasket for the headset bearings. so i picked up a cheep CF fork with a alloy steer tube and a set of headset replacement bearings from nashbar. i also picked up a cheap set of wheels with loose BB with yellow "AEROMAX" decals. i also picked up a set of yellow stripe tires and a yellow seat.
i also have the original handle bars and seat post. i also have a CF seat post that was on my 2010 specialized roubaix that will work.
after doing all of the work everything stopped and ended up in a corner. i am cleaning and getting rid of "STUFF" i have laying around.
another note the original parts not listed are MIA. i might have them somewhere but as of now i am considering them lost.
i am mostly considering selling it with the parts like it sits. i could also buy a groupset and cables, finish it then sell it. or possibly build it and keep it, possibly making it some wall art.
What Would You Do with it?
if i sell it what is it worth as is?
built probably with 10 speed parts. they seem to be priced the about same as 8, and 9 speed stuff on ebay. i probably have some 10 speed parts laying around also.

Mrt2you,
You have done a nice job on the paint restoration, and the parts match nicely. Not being in your area I would guess that you have over $300 in the paint restore and that is what all the frame and parts will be worth to anyone not in the know about what you have. I did a repaint of a Regina Terry that is about a $2500 bike, and it cost $200 for the paint work. Most folks won't pay the cost of the re-paint,let alone the cost of the rebuild on that bike. It will likely be the same for you. I sold a 2100 last year for $120 complete without any work done to it, so be prepared for the worst case money-wise on this one. Good luck! MH

Myself, the old carbon Treks make decent donor bikes, and that's about it. The most recent one I bought, I harvested the nice tri-color parts off of it, including 8 speed STI levers (it was a late 1990s model). Eventually I came across a decent Mongoose (yes Mongoose actually made some decent stuff, but the market hates them). I bought it super cheap, so those parts went back on the Trek and I sold it. Trek name, even with an old carbon frame, does better than the Mongoose name around here.
Re-paint? That money is gone, gone, gone. In my area, I couldn't get $100 for the frame. The old glued together carbon frames get no respect. Had I not gotten the Mongoose so cheap, I would have donated the frame.

I'd think the frame would sell for $80-$100 in my area. It may take some time as you'll have to find someone OK with older carbon bikes.

i know it's not worth much.
the cost of the paint work to me is just my time. i did the work when i didn't have anything else to do and the materials were some extra from another job. the decals cost me $25 if i remember correctly. the stripe guy did me a favor because he was a bike guy also.
honestly if i got $250 for EVERYTHING i would be happy.
the fork with the bearings was $100 and the wheels and tires were over $100.
a group set would probably cost a extra $300 and you would have a nice bike. i really think it would be hard to get $500 for it done.
i think i need to really look over my stash and see what i have laying around.

A complete 2300 with Shimano 600 just got posted locally for $350.

I wouldn't buy anything for it, if you have parts that you want to get rid of, then it may be worth building.
