I do have a Dawes folder as it happens-

more pictures will need to be taken!

(but perhaps that's not for THIS thread...)

Nicely done, I call this a "jump on and go bike" looks light fast and minimal maintenance.

I have Sparrows on my Twenty (photo above), but I had to turn them upside down to get them high enough. Nice bars.

Word of caution, the CR18 451 rims do NOT match up exactly with the Raleigh SA chrome rims. Taping and transferring over will find the spokes too long. I know...

Was Dawes sold in the USA? Is it Whitworth threaded?

It was sold in Britain and brought over to Canada. I saw a Craigslist ad for it about 8 years ago and went up to Canada to buy it. It was originally a three speed.

I had a Dawes Kingpin too, dark blue though. Made in Birmingham, England - like myself... The wheels aren't 20in, they're bigger, an old English size an inch or so bigger. It was generally a better, more competent bike than the 20in shoppers i've had, but the rear tyre liked to slide in corners!

I think the Raleigh Twenty was a nicer frame, though. With that signature 70's Raleigh build method of clasped tube ends, presumably brazed. Sharing this with the Chopper and Grifter amongst others of the time, as well as the twin tubes and fork crown tube.. unmistakable.

Meanwhile, my later Raleigh 20in shoppers, including this Sapphire, were very cheaply made in comparison, with all the personality of an entry-level Walmart special...

Raleigh Twenty Hub

I rebuilt the wheels with Sun Rhino Lite (black) 406 rims. The front has Sturmey Archer drum brake, and the rear has SRAM 2-speed kickback hub w/coaster brakes. I included a rear caliper brake also. So just 2 cables.
My bike images are on Flickr under the same name I use here. I’ll see if I can post photos.

1975 Raleigh Twenty 406

Here's mine. Got a few mods. Alloy seatpost, bars, levers, front hub and rims (Rhyno Lite).
Sturmey S5 5 speed. Cantilever front brake. Shorter reach, stiffer rear brake on a drop mount below the brake bridge. Brooks B67. 1.95" PowerBlocks. Custom front mount for a vintage Cannondale bag. Tools, tubes etc. in a vintage Cannondale Caboose bag. No computer, it would just be depressing. Stem is a 16" Big Cheese 4130 BMX seatpost (Sadly discontinued) with a shim at the top for a modern stem.

At 73 y/o with bad knees, this is the perfect bike for running errands. With the 5 speed I can run a 21t cog and get up any hill in S. Mpls.

My brother had a 'Non-folding Twenty'.
I think it was labeled " The Shopper " ...if i remember correctly.
Most are Brown or Green.. White is pretty rare.
.... did I ever see a Purple one? Now, I am not so sure....

Yes, yes you did. It belongs to a good friend of mine. Posted it here awhile ago.

My mum had one in gold, marked up as a Triumph, but I cannot remember whether it was a folder now? She barely rode it, whereas I rode and rode it, I thought it was a fabulous thing!

Ah crap!

But I must say that the Zizzo maintains the essence of the look

I have just bought a Romet Jubilat with similar handlebars, and they feel so strange as they usually have much flatter bars, but they look so cool.

What are the brake callipers? I seem to remember having those rust-I-like chromed pressed steel ones on mine.

All,

Went out to shovel snow, decided to take a picture.

A 1970's bike on a 1973 car.

Don't know if anyone can help me with this. Doubt if it is a date; 2007.7.21
